China Mobile sending out this message today. Exams really are treated differently here! #gaokao

Interesting to see the state of the Great Wall 100 year ago, clearly lots of restoration in the years since!

It’s Mary Anning’s birthday, so time to share @katebeaton.bsky.social’s brilliant cartoon again.

Maybe the first pass of apple’s AI algorithm should be to determine the voicemail message’s language so it doesn’t produce absolute nonsense like this when the message isn’t in English 🤦 😂

I tried it so you don’t have to: “spicy chicken leg chili flavored ice cream”. Exactly as advertised. Thanks I hate it 🤢

...whoops 🤦 , Maybe check in with your colleagues that know something about China when writing about the market here.... www.nytimes.com/2025/03/05/b... (can anyone think of something that happened this feb in China to lower production? 🤭

China newsletter by @phelimkine.bsky.social on an organization in Shenzhen advertising for scientists and technologists, apparently targeting federal employees laid off by Elon Musk: www.politico.eu/newsletter/c...

Not an exaggeration to say this was pound-for-pound the most effective piece of US public diplomacy in China. Twitter was blocked, but U.S. embassy pollution tweets forced Beijing to start publishing its own pollution data, which fed public outrage. Result: millions breathing vastly less toxic air

Fascinating article on a mysterious 1930s cheese poster from republican era China (with a fun Australia connection too)

Spotted out of my taxi window in Shenzhen today. Old mate selling a live turtle hanging from a stick 🤦‍♂️ (when I came back the same way 2 hours later he was gone…so I guess he sold it 🤷)

McDonald's China throwing down the gauntlet

What annoys the hell out of me with the coverage of many things altman says is how each article is basically a quote of his ramblings. Unchallenged, investigated just quoted

Fun (and pretty balanced) look at where I live, from @techaltar.bsky.social In recent times I’ve seen a lot of tech utopia BS on social media that makes Shenzhen look like a cyberpunk wet dream. The reality is more or less this video. Not utopia nor dystopia just a particularly modern chinese city.

Got a bank card replaced today 🙌 (only took 2 trips to the bank, 3 hours total, almost 20 documents signed) ❤️ China

Some thoughts on Australia day from 124 years ago

This is too funny.

"A ring-sized watch to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Casio Watches" www.casio.com/us/watches/c... Lol wut?

Checked out a newly opened playground with the kid today (in Shenzhen talent park/人才公园). Totally awesome, and being a work day not too busy 🙌 Also how cool is this crab! 🦀

Jacinta Allan : Don’t be a dickhead. Guys in the replies : EXCUSE ME I’M STANDING RIGHT HERE.

I’d just about completely forgot about this!

Well this is fascinating...worried about Alzheimer’s? Seems one solution might be to drive a cab! (or better yet an ambulance) Study here: www.bmj.com/content/387/....

Father Christmas arrives at the British Legation on a camel, Peking, 1923.

the feds: stop trying to turn this guy into some cool antihero with a badass public image also the feds: *treat him like they’ve captured the joker*

Risking my girders! www.smh.com.au/culture/come...

With the greatest theme song ever ! 🎵 “born from egg on a mountain top, the funkiest monkey there ever was, he knew every magic trick under the sun, to please the gods and everyone and have some fun, monkey magic!🎵 🤩

Wow this was fun. Haha surprised sky managed to give him such a good run. youtu.be/c__fDd1dN_U?...

Interesting take on wolf-warriorism and its origins (perhaps more because of Trump than Xi)

The first financial scandal/crisis to defeat all attempts at satire. There's nothing to say

Shitty analogy aside, there is some sense in the change of policy (if you read the full story). The reality is AI is here, and it’s difficult to detect. So: students do as u like, *but*expect occasional closed book tests/assessments where u won’t have technology. Fairly pragmatic for mine.

HBO's The Wire is rightly lauded for its vivid & realistic depiction of urban decay. But you might not notice that under the surface it is also a subtle exposition on Mohist & Legalist challenges to Confucian orthodoxy as witnessed during China's turbulent Warring States era …

Very cool artwork in a glasses store in Shenzhen. Doesn’t seem to be many buying glasses, but plenty checking out in the big guy (me included)
