Then you can show what 10 or 11 copies look like. And how tedious it is to draw it out. So that's when the area model and multiplying the 4 (or more) decomposed number sentences is connected to the concrete/pictorial model.

I really like to use the place value chart to show the a 1 digital × 2 digital first. Lets take 4×34. You can physically show how you are making 4 groups of 34. The concrete/pictorial model matches the beginning of the area model/partial products

I try to bring these conversations to my different Community of Practice groups- elem, middle and HS content based. At least that way we get to have some of the conversation on a regional level for some of the districts I work with.
