Also, asking homeowners for permission would kill the burglary industry.

Cheap, ignorant soundbite from Jenkyns - as several commenters have pointed out, even if Lincolnshire had those officers, it wouldn't be in the mayor's power to sack them.

Britain, a trading nation, now has a vital choice to make about its priority trading partners: - the EU, where agreements are made, kept, reciprocal, based on international norms, & enforced by a court - the USA, where agreements are made, broken, changed & broken again at a whim, with no recourse

Some interesting points here.

Misleading headline from the BBC, as it's only *personal* imports that have been banned. It does scupper our plans to bring back some interesting Dutch cheese from holiday next month, though! (Not sure how a cheese butty can spread foot & mouth?) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Important question, but thin answer. As ever, no consideration of how the proposed alternatives might work in the context of distance education. HE providers like the Open University can't, for example, turn lectures into seminars for assessment purposes. www.timeshighereducation.com/campus/shoul...

That's a really useful analogy.

Blocking MPs from voting on a US trade deal would be straight out of Trump's anti-democratic playbook. Labour MPs should make clear to the PM they won't let him sell out our NHS, undercut farmers or weaken protection for children online. He must give Parliament a vote.

As someone with pretentions of being an essayist, I hope the essay is not dead. A good essay is a test - assay - not of what you know, but of what you think. It should show how well you understand a topic or subject. And a good essay should not contain stale phrases like "well and truly".

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years as a result of a deliberate strategy. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

Gruesome, hilarious, grateful, angry... I remember some of it - perhaps from the 10th anniversary? - but was glad to read it all again.

Useful outline of why a blanket wealth tax might not work & suggestions for alternative ways to tax the wealthy. Taxing wealth is better than a wealth tax eastangliabylines.co.uk/business/eco...

This is true: The Trump administration said it has imposed a 10% tariff on the British Indian Ocean Territory, whose only inhabitants are the U.S. and U.K. service members at the military base on Diego Garcia.

The full verdict is now in and it is HUGE 🇫🇷 Le Pen and co-defendants all guilty 🇫🇷 All banned from holding public office 🇫🇷 Ban takes effect immediately - in other words she cannot remain in politics while she spins out the appeals process 🇫🇷 She can, however, appeal to the Conseil Constitutionnel

Britain's 177 billionaires sit on £965 bn - more EACH than the average Brit will earn in 1000 lifetimes. So obviously, Labour decided NOT to have a 2% wealth tax on this obscene, unspendable hoarding. More poverty for 6.9m disabled Britons is their solution. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

This headline is misleading. Reeves has not been "forced" to find an additional £1.6 billion in cuts to benefits. She has CHOSEN to impose more cuts on benefits because she refuses to raise taxes on the wealthiest. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Anyways...

I'm sure no one is thinking of going to the US for a convention, a conference or research but just in case you were...

This needs to be more widely recognized. From bed-blocking to medical conditions worsening through neglect, it seems so obvious that social care issues impact the NHS.

Just spent day reading about the collapse of the British car industry. The lack of vision, the managerial incompetence, the strategic insularity, the complacent reliance on ‘world-class’ marques, the constant short-termism, bad labour relations. And I thought: yup, there go our universities too.
