This year, for teacher appreciation week, maybe we can have less coffee mugs and candles and instead have more speaking up. Speak up to defend public education…

I moved my newsletter, Bending The Arc, from Substack to Wordpress this year. It's fine. I have the same functions without the additional network noise. I'm sure I could do more to optimize the appearance but that's for another lifetime. bendingthearcnewsletter.blog/2025/04/25/b...

We'll give AI human rights before we give actual humans human rights

How the Word Is Passed (Adapted for Young Readers) will be out September 2nd and is now available for pre-order. Can’t wait for you all to read it. Shout out to teachers. This is for y’all. www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/clint...

I’m seeing an uptick in “transitioning teacher” content in ways I haven’t seen since 2021. So here are some friendly reminders that… 1.) This is an absolutely terrible job market and many companies, including edtech, have suffered from mass layoffs since October 2022. 1/

🎉🎉 Can’t wait for all the classrooms to meet Kareem and Shifa Saltagi Safadi’s wonderful novel in verse, KAREEM BETWEEN. #GRA25 #EduSky

"They’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us."

I’ve never pushed back against a parent who doesn’t want their kid to discuss a book. Ghosts are a problem? Say no more. Language too intense? There’s always something else in the book room. You only become a problem when you fight to make decisions for *other* people’s kids.

A racist against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 did the longest filibuster. That same senator voted against the Civil Rights Act and Voting Act. So, yes, this filibuster is historic. No matter your feelings about Booker, you must applaud his passion and dedication to democracy.

Thank you, @edutopia.org, for running an excerpt of my latest book ❤️ www.edutopia.org/article/guid...

A few years ago I visited the National Museum of African American History & Culture with my grandparents. When we stepped out of the building my grandmother kept repeating the words “I lived it. I lived it. I lived it.” She’s still here. That history is still in her bones. You can never erase that.

I hear people on here say that want organizing 101 training. CTWO has two virtual organizing 101 sessions coming in April and May. ctwo.org/organizing-1...

Found this in the department office if you weren't sure how serious the Maryland hoops scene is

"In Yemen? Okay, thanks Pete."

IT'S DEFINITELY THE SOLO DINING

Emails to home adults is a career-defining, game-changing process.

Reminder that tools exist to help you demand actions from your representatives. Use them. @resist.bot is messaging based tool that lets you email reps all at once or choose. Text RESIST to 50409 to start. @5calls.org lists issues, scripts and can connect you to reps easily to call

Teaching has always been difficult—the last five years nearly impossible. And also I KNOW there are lots of problems in education. But if you are some sort of progressive who is amplifying this rhetoric, you are helping fascists destroy public education

One thing non-disabled people can do to make things easier for disabled people: pause and manage YOUR anxiety about our health instead of spewing it on us. I know it's distressing to hear that someone isn't getting "better" or is in pain. But we don't need to end up comforting *you*

America's sweethearts the Detroit Pistons are capturing the nation's hearts!

Hey @mitchnobis.bsky.social got my NBA notifications last night and thought "Wow America's team the Detroit Pistons are really putting in that work!"

Remember the part in Julius Caesar when they all stab Julius Caesar because they realize Julius Caesar needs to be stabbed #IdesOfMarch

The government is about to give OpenAI the ability to legally steal if we do not flood this page in the next 12 hours. OpenAI will have immunity from all lawsuits regarding copyright infringement. All other AI companies will follow. Do you despise AI? Dissent, retweet. Do something. #furry #art

A word:

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, vividly brought to life by E.M. Carroll, powerfully portrays a teen’s silence after (Trigger Warning) sexual assault. Haunting art and raw emotions make Melinda’s journey unforgettable. Must-read in finding one’s voice. 💙📚 #BookSky I wish I had the courage back then.

Shout out to all the daylight we didn't save

Imagine refusing to even get in the fight and somehow still getting your ass kicked

🚨 Everyone needs to call their Dem Senator right now. They are starting to cave. Tell them: 1. Vote NO on Cloture AND 2. Vote NO on the Republican spending bill. Don’t let them pivot to reconciliation. GOP doesn’t need Dem votes on that and they know it. TODAY is the showdown. 🤳🏽: (202) 224-3121

During my Linguascope webinar last week, I gave some ideas for quick, low-prep starter activities, including using this type of “connections” game. In the chat, I was asked if there is a website where you can make up your own connections board and voilà here it is! The website is connectionsplus.io

Linda McMahon is unqualified, unfit, and dangerous to our nation’s students and educators.

I'm old enough to remember when certain people said taking down Confederate monuments was "woke" and "erasing history"
