To walk this out fully: this is why you can’t just try to pick already popular positions and hope for the best. You have to pitch a worldview to people whose votes are up for grabs. Their perception of reality is highly fungible, and you bring them to your side by actually doing politics

Well, if I've learned anything from Mark's podcast, this is a foolproof plan

like, Ds don't really have trouble winning elections; they win elections regularly. but the focus on winning always, or the idea that the only way to beat fascism is to always win, is horribly flawed, and I think actually prevents us from holding fascists accountable.

to some degree, though, it's all academic, not because it's over so much as because "winning every election ever" simply is not actually a strategy for defeating fascism. you're not going to win every election. that's not how democracies work.

the point of Andor isn't "only anarchists are right" or "only terrorism works" or "only liberals defeat fascism" it's that birthing a movement that can destroy an imperial regime requires a diversity of tactics and people all willing to throw their lives away for the cause

I don't know if that was the first one specifically, but that column started in early 2002. Most of his earlier columns were in The Duelist until 99, and then it took a bit for the website to find its feet.

i read this entire thread and i think the author really should contend with the fact that *actual enslaved people in 1776* read that declaration, thought it applied to them, and used it as the grounds for political action
