I know there is a lot of bad crap to keep track of, but this historian nearly lost her proverbial spit when she read that der Führer wants to make Todd Blanche(?!?!) Librarian of Congress. GTFO out of OUR library, leck mich und stirbt, this shall not pass, NOOOOOOO! www.wonkette.com/p/congressio...

I don't know what to think about the news that the new UC president is the (now former) president of the University of Texas.

Got a nasty letter today from the IRS, claiming I owe $66.18 for 2023. Since we don't pay U.S. taxes anymore, I forwarded it to our accountant to make it go away. One consequence of DOGE though is: I don't take the U.S. government seriously anymore. Elon & his brats can just f§$% off and leck mich.

Flying to the U.S. tomorrow: really hoping our planes don't crash. The FDA inspectors have all been fired but perhaps the food is still OK this week, maybe avoid raw fruits, uncooked vegetables? Was für ein Dreckslochsland.

What interests me about Kristi Noem's stolen purse is what was not in it (allegedly): a personal or govt.-issued credit card. Guess with El-Doge mucking around in Fiscal Services, she not want to (or could not?) use plastic.

Sometimes I wonder if Trump officials have a quota for number of lies told in a day and when they meet that quota, they get a treat, like a cookie or a fish.

@mjfree.bsky.social Apparently big loser is still sitting by the phone, waiting for a boy to call him. Sad! edition.cnn.com/2025/04/10/p...

A US judge said there was no evidence the Trump administration had tried to secure the return of a man illegally deported to El Salvador, but said she would not hold the government in contempt of court for now reut.rs/4jgoMZa

Once in Paris I saw a pony ride operator unload 12 ponies from an ordinary horse trailer like something out of a Buster Keaton film. U.S. trade policy is as ridiculous & comical as that pony clowncar and nowhere near as entertaining.

Project 2025 („Mandate for Leadership”) proposed (p. 167) that a Trump administration require the Department of Treasury to provide tax information about undocumented immigrants to the Department of Homeland Security. www.project2025.org/policy/

‪I was interviewed last week by Avi Woolf of "Avi's Conversational Corner" podcast about my book, Selling America: Immigration Promotion and the Settlement of the American Continent, 1607-1914. I've never done a podcast interview, let me know what you think! avisconcorner.fireside.fm/sczieglermcp...

Journalism I'd like to see: an explanation of how many Americans work in manufacturing vs. services (FYI: less than 10% vs 80%); a list of food/agricultural products imported because the U.S. cannot grow/produce them; a list of top U.s. exports (oil, machinery, electronics, cars, planes).

So, how much did Trump lose you this week? Us: too f@#€ing much.

Remember in the Harris-Trump debate, when Harris called Trump's tariff plans a "20% tax on everyday goods" and Trump lied through his f§$%ing ass that tariffs are not consumption taxes and there was zero push-back on this lie from moderator David Muir? I do.

Can you imagine an American politician being banned from holding political office for any amount of time for a civil, much less a criminal, conviction? Yeah. I can't either. Danke Frankreich!

Paid off the mortgage this morning. Glad to be debt-free!

In late fall 2016 I started reading Richard Evans' history of the Third Reich trilogy but could not finish it (never read about Nazis in the dark months!). Now, with daylight savings tomorrow, I am starting over from the beginning and I am determined to finish before the days start to get shorter.

WaPo story about how to sanitize and lock your phone before one travels to the U.S.: The clear assumption is that a traveler should takes certain steps to protect himself against the government violating his First Amendment rights, because one can expect the government to violate said rights.

This Signal chat Houthis bombing scandal makes me think of Jefferson and the Barbary pirates in 1803, without of course the constitutional debate about executives using war powers without a congressional declaration of war. 'Cuz that ship sailed a long time ago.

Germany's new parliament opens this morning; die Linke representative Gregor Gysi, who has sat in Parliament since unification in October 1990, is elected the oldest member and chairs the first session until a new Bundestag president is elected. Scholz remains chancellor until Merz is elected.

Yes, this Signal chat group thingee is appalling but let's not get too distracted by this shiny ball from all of the OTHER totally illegal horrendous Dreck the Drumpfers are doing. We CAN walk and chew gum at the same time (and they can't).

@rossfrench.bsky.social We started this morning talking about Ken DeFeudis & "Run for Cover Lover" & of course, I thought of you. & Yes, I can hear you cursing me from California.

Spent the morning organizing a measles booster for a trip to the U.S. next month, because the U.S. is now one of those countries where you need shots before you travel. WaPo: "Md. confirms measles case; Dulles Airport travelers may have been exposed."

Antifa went wilding in our neighborhood last night. Not sure if this was in reaction to the CDU-SPD Bundeswehr finance package announcement or because Thursday is our recycling day & they knew there would be lots of paper available to burn. Das Viertel ist bunt! www.butenunbinnen.de/nachrichten/...

The collection & analysis of statistics & other data became a responsibility of government in the late 19th century (although the Census is an important forerunner). Business & the citizenry depend on accurate information about the economy & society.

Journalism I'd like to see: which agribusinesses are going to be buying up those farms that are going to go bankrupt with these tariffs & the loss of USAID as a market? Someone is going to make a killing.

Rant from 100-year old univ adjunct: when I was a student, one was expected to buy books in order to do the required reading. Now students expect the prof to give them the readings, for free. And somehow we are supposed to keep producing intellectual property, without compensation by publishers.

Drumpf wants to pull the U S. back to Feb. 1893: immigration was largely shut off due to cholera still present in Hamburg; Gold standard; 1890 McKinley tariffs in effect. Too bad about the Panic of 1893 that started that month as well & lasted until roughly 1897.

I would like to see actual evidence that Musk is sleeping on a floor after working 100 hours in a week. Everything is performative BS with these people. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/27/o...

Gray days in Bremen (lit & fig): Werder lost to 3rd Liga Bielefeld in Pokal last night, many people are depressed about Merz as Kanzler, and the warm spell since Friday that seemed to melt everything and suggest spring is really coming is over and now we are back to kalt und grau again.
