I think the issue is that headlines do have an incredible amount of power, but not the specific kind of true power people sometimes suggest they have and that you’re arguing against. (Appropriately, some people objecting may have just read the headline.)

Pretty sure we’re also nearing the point of having surgical-grade laser beams as headlights.

It’s totally cool that he went to Bama, but the “$200,000 in debt” calculation seems to be the TV station’s, not his, and it may well be wrong. Very fancy schools have some of the best financial aid. See, e.g.:

You know, as a law professor, I don’t like to say “the practice of law isn’t for everybody,” but there are those occasional cases…

Yes, @bradlander.bsky.social, great opportunity to get your name in the news as someone standing up for NYC.

I previously allowed students to access the internet during their exams, but I have indeed cut that off due to AI. I'm still allowing them to access their hard drives, but that might have to go soon, too. I'd love a better answer than ludditing!

If you see the word “asteroid,” just know that this was a very very boring story—an asteroid that was never going to hit us is still not going to hit us—and you can just scroll right on past it!

It's mostly not this at all...and then there's the occasional thing I look back on and think, "ooh, yeah, that was bad..."

Also emblematic that they'd respond to an in-progress crime with, "No, we're not going to try to stop the crime, but don't worry, we'll punish the perpetrator after it's done!"

Yeah, I think the opponents need to figure out how to speak to the less-online crowd. They need to convince the people who want establishment Dems.

Yeah, I currently plan to rank Brad Lander #1. I think he’d be a solid mayor. But while I don’t have much faith in Mamdani, I’ll definitely rank him (even if he won’t be my top ZM!).
comment in response to post
I definitely get that. But right now he’s polling at the top of the non-Cuomo candidates, so I think we need to ask: if it eventually comes down to the two of them, do I prefer to vote for one over the other or not have any say? It’s a “lesser of two evils” vote, sure, but that’s not unusual.
comment in response to post
My view is that if you don’t like Mamdani but prefer him to Cuomo, you should rank him #5. Your vote will almost certainly count for him only if it’s between the two of them!
