Terminal Boredom is a collection of Izumi Suzuki’s stories. In one story, a character asks: “I am no man and I’m no woman. Who needs gender anyway?” The line is one of the thematic focal points of Suzuki’s work. 1/4

While we're all discussing Rachel Zegler's Eva Perón, may I suggest the novel Santa Evita by Tomas Eloy Martinez bookshop.org/a/214/978067...

Today they announced that Matthew McConaughey is writing a "faith-filled collection of personal poetry and prayers about navigating the rodeo of life" as a follow up to his best selling memoir, which sold six MILLION copies. 🫠 Anyway, I wrote about why maybe celebs should give books a rest.

Fumio Takano’s Swan Knight (trans Sharni Wilson) is loosely based on the true story of the very queer King Ludwig II of Bavaria. He lost interest in affairs of state, becoming interested in arts—esp the work of Richard Wagner. He refused to marry and had affairs with members of the Bavarian cavalry.

I did a list of books with awesome worldbuilding (and just awesome in general) for the NYT review of books. Here's a gift link: #booksky www.nytimes.com/2025/06/26/b...

Though in many of its aspects this visible world seems formed in love, the invisible spheres were formed in fright.

We're (just over) halfway there! The Strange Horizons Kickstarter is 65% funded! Help support the same quality SFF content that we are committed to publishing every week! We even won a Hugo last year for our efforts! And we couldn't do any of it without your generosity. Help us get to 100%!

So proud of @catmitchell17.bsky.social and @pennyauthor.bsky.social for making a #Disability focus issue of @thebookseller.com happen after 3 years hiatus. So heartening to see such brilliant books by disabled, D/deaf, neurodivergent writers being published across genres, as in my preview. #BookSky

So… This is a fun example of literature in public life. These are characters from the 16th century CHINESE epic, Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en providing feedback on how to behave on the Toei Line in Tokyo. 1/5

More for Pride: Japanese authors have written about same sex relationships for more than a millennium. RJL presents a list of LGBTQ+ stories from Japan that are available in English translation. Not all of the authors listed are/were queer.

We will be participating in a collab between @bookshop_org @gretchenrubin tomorrow! At 5pm we will have a special 25-minute silent reading experience, followed by discussion. You can read at home, however, attendees at the store will enter a drawing for prizes. #Read25Day #Read25in2025

*bangs on the table in agreement* translator Cathy Hirano gave us the phrase 'spark joy' -- that's the power of a good localiser, the ability to convey something so well it goes from a national concept to a worldwide meme.

lol what happened here

(sighing) Seems like a good day to mention that there are wizardly universes in which the series creator's only opinion about toilets is that when you use one, you should try not to miss. www.youngwizards.com

THREAD. After a tough few months (involving my ex-publisher Unbound ceasing to pay their authors, then disintegrating) I am enormously relieved to reveal Joe McLaren's fantastic cover for my 3rd novel. The book will be published on September 11th. I believe it's the best thing I've ever written.

Due to the collapse of my ex-publishers, following their decision to stop paying their authors, my first novel Villager has been unavailable for a while. Happily, Swift Press will be republishing it in autumn. If you like this, you might like the book too... tomcox.substack.com/p/the-villag...

A not insignificant part of my job is stopping older customers from buying the books that are sitting on our counter because they themselves just brought them in for trade... "Oh, I like this author!" Yeah, I know. You just gave me eight of them.

Akutagawa winner Li Kotomi draws from some of her own experiences in Solo Dance (trans Arthur Reiji Morris). “A powerful novel about the LGBTQ rights movement and gay love in Japan and Taiwan, from the most important queer voice of East Asia's millennial generation.”

We're on Main Street Monroe, with books 😀

This whole piece is a delight to read. We need so many more disabled voices in our storytelling world. But it brings me special pride seeing @tinywriterlaura.bsky.social's THE AWAKENED featured there. Laura has worked so long for this, and she's a star!

Open until 6:30pm for Silent Book Club, or you can buy a book. That works too.

What a coincidence, this is who runs this account:

Me: DEATH BEFORE DISHONOUR!!! Librarian: Well done. You’re really getting the hang of alphabetising.

I did a post listing everything I've got coming out for the rest of the year, as far as I know. Short stories, Murderbot news, preorder links for Queen Demon, the sequel to Witch King, etc. marthawells.dreamwidth.org/666162.html #booksky

Seattle folk are you excited to see me & @caitlinrozakis.bsky.social? I’m excited to be there!

I just talked to Caroline Kepnes. She doesn’t have a substack, @rollingstone.com. Also, JD Barker was asking women to get naked with his book on TikTok last year. Not a single quote here. This whole piece is shit. Not a single person fact checked this trash? That’s sad. And stupid.

This is a reprint Murderbot short story, from 2021. #booksky

We are over halfway through pride month and I have once again forgotten to talk about my Sapphic Beauty and the Beast retelling set in 1860s France! Natural science! Trashy adventure serials! Reluctant engagements! Faked deaths! 8-feet tall fox monsters! Owls! Avail all formats, the audio slaps.
