Researchers pinpoint the genes responsible for the final three pea traits studied by Gregor Mendel more than 160 years ago https://go.nature.com/3EC3eqT

The Pacific Northwest Yeast Club is holding their annual meeting on June 20th, 2025 in beautiful Vancouver, Canada! There are only 100 spots and registration is open now: www.pnwyc.net

Application deadline extended to Apr 15 for this summer's #Yeast #Genetics & #Genomics course at @cshlaboratory.bsky.social July22 - Aug12! Get a comprehensive education in all things yeast, from classical genetics through up-to-the-minute genomics. Don't miss out! meetings.cshl.edu/courses.aspx...

This is one of the best features I have seen on blue sky yet- a custom feed of papers from people you follow. I had to un-follow the various biorxiv channels, as it was dominant, but now I am seeing lots of cool papers from people I follow. Great work on this feed, @paper-feed.bsky.social team!

Microbiologists, check out this genius trick for orienting flat toothpicks that comes from the legendary Beth Jones by way of Bonny Brewer. Video taken by my lab manager, Emily.

Nothing like new data to lift the spirits. 44 new caspofungin-resistant @yevolab.bsky.social genomes! Can't wait to get these back in the hands of the high school students who evolved these yeast strains.

Sadly, our colleague and friend Scott Hawley passed away this morning. He was an irreplaceable presence and force for good in the meiosis an Drosophila communities and will be sorely missed.

Genome Sciences is looking for a Grants Manager for the Model Organism Genetics labs (which include me!): uwhires.admin.washington.edu/ENG/candidat...

Genome Sciences is on Bluesky now!

New work in Genetics by @reneegeck.bsky.social when she was in my lab, Nick Powell, et al. delving into novel variants in G6PD in the All of Us resource. Functional analysis of G6PD variants associated with low G6PD activity in the All of Us Research Program academic.oup.com/genetics/art...

After 60 years, scientists finally know why ginger, calico, and tortoiseshell #cats look the way they do. scim.ag/3BpxRxY

Work with Nick Powell is out on Genetics! Nick used data from the All of Us Research Project to connect G6PD genotypes and phenotypes, and I tested some variant functions in yeast with @maitreya.bsky.social! Power of human+yeast genetics! academic.oup.com/genetics/adv...

Had a great workshop today with the Hutch SEP & a bunch of local teachers interested in using our Yeast Madness kit in their classes. This module uses strains evolved by previous yEvo high school students and teaches about mutations, fitness, & cell biology. www.fredhutch.org/en/education...

Question for the #CryoEM crowd: does anyone happen to recognize this lovely ~10-15nm diameter protein complex we stumbled across while imaging slime mold protein lysate (as one does)?

I made a starter pack of folks affiliated with UW Genome Sciences (past and present) go.bsky.app/L8RAbiJ It's fairly sparse for now, so please let me know if you'd like to be added!

Calling all microbiologists in the PNW! Registration is now open for the 2024 American Society for Microbiology Northwest Branch meeting, to be held in Seattle, WA over November 9-10. Register and submit your abstracts at www.nwasm.org!

Well how nice is this interview with @blakebillmyre.bsky.social about the impact on him of a talk I gave about @ivanliachko.bsky.social's ARS genomics project! That was a pretty fun conference :) mSphere of Influence: When a sequencer is more than a sequencer journals.asm.org/doi/full/10....

The department surprised me with a very nice "new chair" toast at the retreat and gave me a literal UW camping chair as a gift 🥹

Excited for Dunham/@kelleyharris.bsky.social graduate student Gabby's selection for the Human Genetics Scholars program from ASHG! www.ashg.org/publications...

As we head into the new school year, if you're an intro genetics instructor and would like to share exams, slides, problem sets, activities, and other teaching materials, you're invited to join the Genetics Educators Exchange. Please request access here: forms.gle/535PnGhBbJU7...

Validating all my lab hoarding instincts, we just came up with a use for these tiny glass Petri dishes that I saved from the Botstein lab lo many years ago. Turns out the shipping date on the box was 1960 to Stanford, so now I’m very curious who David got them from!

Today is @taykatwang.bsky.social's last day in my group! She's stayed on for a remote mini-postdoc to finish up a few things (stay tuned!) after graduating with her PhD in December. Thanks to David Gresham for hosting her at NYU. I'm very excited for her as she starts a postdoc with Snow Zhou!

Good luck to star postdoc @reneegeck.bsky.social as she goes off to start as a professor at Gonzaga!

One of the great lessons of being “midcareer” is that you can literally just will something into being if you want it to exist and are willing to put in a little work. I sometimes feel like Dorothy Gale that I’ve had the power all along and just didn’t realize!

Final schedule posted for the Pacific Northwest Yeast Club regional meeting! No registration required, so you can just show up Friday (directions on website), with or without a poster. Thanks to Sunrise Science and Fred Hutch for sponsoring food/drinks! www.pnwyc.net/schedule

Nice new lab website, thanks to grad student @geneticswithrae.bsky.social! depts.washington.edu/dunhamlab/

It's not every day that you get voted on by the UW Board of Regents and get a letter signed by the president and provost. Looks like I'm officially Chair! (effective July 1, which is why this article is from earlier this month) huddle.uwmedicine.org/maitreya-dun...

New @yevolab.bsky.social paper in G3 led by @reneegeck.bsky.social and featuring work from the classrooms of Tim Renz and Rebecca Brewer! Experimental evolution of S. cerevisiae for caffeine tolerance alters multidrug resistance and TOR signaling pathways academic.oup.com/g3journal/ar...

Two new students starting in the lab today! Welcome grad student Rachel and undergrad Elinor!

The Pacific Northwest Yeast Club is meeting on July 26! Submit to present your work at www.pnwyc.net. Deadline is June 7!

New preprint from Joe in my lab w/ @pyjiang.bsky.social & @kelleyharris.bsky.social on some unexpected yeast mutants that grow on both -uracil plates & 5-FOA plates! Whaaaat?!? URA6 mutations provide an alternative mechanism for 5-FOA resistance in S. cerevisiae www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

The Pacific Northwest Yeast Club is back this summer! We'll meet on July 26 at Fred Hutch in Seattle. If you're interested in presenting a short talk, please apply here by June 7 (no registration needed if you'd like to present a poster or just attend): forms.gle/x1hR6hinAMCm...

I am thrilled to share that I will be joining @maitreya.bsky.social’s lab for my thesis work, starting in June! 🔬🧬

We’re hiring a new student helper. This is a crucial position that supports lab infrastructure, including glassware, autoclaving, lab maintenance tasks, etc. Looking for someone reliable and detail-oriented! UW students please apply! (Login required) app.joinhandshake.com/emp/jobs/898...

Posting from @transcriptsblog on twitter: Dr. Maitreya Dunham shares stories of her path to becoming a yeast geneticist and her passion for teaching and science outreach. Written by @yimeiwan and @kyyjiang : www.transcripts.blog/2024/05/12/c...

Nice article about our brewing yeast proteomics paper with @riddhiman.bsky.social and @edwardmarcotte.bsky.social! Beer brewers and geneticists collaborate on study of yeast changes during commercial fermentation genestogenomes.org/beer-brewers...

Lab milestone: we ran out of sterile toothpicks! The cause is this photo, which is a mixture of GFP labeled & wt yeast. You can zoom in to see a nice “single colony” that’s really a mix. You get away with one streak most of the time, but an extra colony purification is safer!

New preprint with @reneegeck.bsky.social in collaboration with Nick Powell. All of Us continues to be a rich resource to probe genetic variation. "Functional Analysis of G6PD Variants Associated With Low G6PD Activity in the All of Us Research Program" www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...

Awesome new addition to my office plants collection: a bioluminescent petunia! It’s not quite as bright as the picture shows, but it’s totally visible. Thanks @bethkarenmartin (twitter handle) for coordinating the bulk buy!
