I have not been able to stop thinking about Rümeysa Öztürk. Frpm personal experience, opinion pieces in campus newspapers are often one of the only levers students have to criticize university leadership and actually be heard. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Spent some time with @kieraevebutler.bsky.social considering Casey Means, Trump’s surgeon general pick: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Powerful new piece "Inside the Bloodbath at the NIH" from @gregggonsalves.bsky.social in The Nation... www.thenation.com/article/poli...

Watch the new Surgeon General nominee rattle off "too many too soon", "our bodies know what to do", "THEY don't let you think these things!!!!" and the rest of the core RFK Jr disciple articles of faith. Then call Bill Cassidy in the morning and tell him this time, vote fuck no.

NEW: Whistleblower records show that the NIH axed research grants – even after a federal judge blocked the cuts with an injunction. www.propublica.org/article/trum... 🧵

I spend a lot of time disparaging those who are failing us in this moment - but today I want to shine a light on all of those who are helping to make the threats to science and universities legible for other scientists and the public🧪 1/

A researcher at Medical College of Wisconsin voiced to the NIH Director the fear so many of us are feeling amidst state suppression of research. Bhattacharya replied researchers should avoid certain topics, incl climate change & systemic racism, to succeed in science. biztimes.com/speaking-at-...

Journalists writing on Vinay Prasad, I strongly encourage you to show videos of him in his own words to your readers. I have a decent collection and can help you curate. Let your readers see who he really is. youtu.be/_HZDNG9gO1Q

NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya's rush to absolve himself is particularly interesting to me as someone who paid attention to his public statements since 2020. He holds Collins & Fauci personally responsible for every aspect of the Covid response (& origins), regardless of their actual involvement.

My expectations were low but this is a frankly shocking read.

This weekend, NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya praised the Trump admin for "bringing back academic freedom," saying researchers at NIH who disagree w him are still free to publish. Kevin Hall resigned due to censorship at NIH, incl being told to remove his name from a paper mentioning health equity.

NIH’s new director, Jayanta “Jay” Bhattacharya, dismissed the report as “rumors” in an interview with Science on Thursday morning, hours before he announced the new policy. www.science.org/content/arti...

The President's proposed budget would cut NIH funding by 40%. And the NIH director previously stated his support for funding cuts at NIH.

BREAKING: Reports that Trump would try to cut NIH's budget by 40% have come true. The request released moments ago would: - Cut $18 BILLION to NIH's $47b budget - Eliminate NIMHD, NCCIH, FIC - Collapse ICs into five 'focus areas' There's also a long screed about NIH's deficiencies.

1/9 Excited to share the preprint for the second half of my PhD with @mollyschumer.bsky.social: Connecting human environmental impacts to hybridization in swordtail fish through genomics, GIS, water chemistry, and histology. Thread below! #SciSky www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

NEW: Something we learned earlier this month is that HHS Secretary Kennedy’s forthcoming autism research project is in the hands of two men who have cast doubt on vaccines. They are NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya and longtime collaborator Martin Kulldorff. www.importantcontext.news/p/nih-autism...

I've received a few dozen responses, but I want more. Have you had pertussis? Polio? Rubella? Please tell me about it, whether you were too old for a vaccine, it wasn't effective for you, or you didn't get vaccinated for some other reason. And please share with folks not on Bluesky!

Really great and terrifying overview plus a tidbit I missed - RFK Jr has said he plans for Matthew Memoli to lead NIAID (Fauci's former role). Memoli was the Acting Director of NIH who unleashed so much chaos at the beginning of the year.

I received a surprising and disturbing request from NIH on Friday. They wrote to cancel a subaward to Hong Kong on one of my grants. (This was disturbing but not surprising.) They also ordered us not to interact with our collaborators in Hong Kong on any work under the award:

"This is consistent with everything Trump and his allies have revealed about their views on science since January: that it is not a means to better understand objective reality, but a political weapon that they must guard against, or deploy themselves."

HHS Sec RFK Jr said Martin Kulldorff will be playing a role in "designing the grant proposals" for his study to find the "root cause of childhood autism." Kulldorff has repeatedly stated evidence does not suggest MMR causes autism. He said "to find the cause, we must urgently look elsewhere."

🧵1/N New study published in @jama.com on re-emergence of vaccine-eliminated infectious diseases under declining vaccination in the US. We model long-term risk and conditions for return to endemicity for measles, rubella, polio, & diphtheria. Collab w/ @Mathewkiang.com jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary refuses to directly say that parents should vaccine their kids against measles

Remember that absurd letter the acting US attorney sent to medical journals last week, asking threatening questions about why they don’t publish more heterodox science? The New England Journal of Medicine got one as well. @aniloza.bsky.social has the story.

I was thrilled yesterday to see a clear, strongly worded letter joined by over 280 university presidents and leaders coming together in a united front to oppose the Trump attacks on higher education. I was equally disappointed and disgusted by my Stanford leaders' cowardly decision not to join.

It turns out misinformation is effective: Survey: "One-third of Republicans (35%) and a quarter (26%) of independents say it is “definitely” or “probably true” that the MMR vaccines have been proven to cause autism." Reality: MMR vaccines DO NOT cause autism. www.kff.org/health-infor...

Maddy is doing incredible work & I've learned so much from her. Another awful loss.

It took Peter Staley two weeks to build 200 full-sized coffins. The longtime AIDS activist, with a group of volunteers, fashioned them out of styrofoam, tape and velcro. On Thursday, the volunteers stacked coffins 10 layers deep outside the State Department to protest cuts to global AIDS relief.

Not surprising that an administration that rose to power on the spread of bullshit and propaganda is terminating the funding of researchers studying these phenomena. We are just receiving word about funding cancellations re: existing grants to members of our team and our colleagues.
