There are always a handful that have a sudden jolt of logic when they get pushed too far...at which point it's usually too late. There will be no convincing all of them, especially those who've gotten hold of power, but if we can jolt just a handful out of it sooner with questions, I'll keep trying.

I need Handmaid's Tale to be required viewing for everyone in the US, honestly. Siding with bullies will not afford you protection forever. Eventually when they've picked off the vulnerable and the rebels, they'll turn on you too.

I'm not surprised. I read shel silversteen's The Giving Tree for the first time this week with my 3 year old. I'm in my 30s raised in the south in conservative/fundamentalist southern Baptist circles. It was amazing btw. I don't even know why I wasn't allowed to read it as a kid.

It's been 5 years since the pandemic. And it's taken some serious inner work, exploring my faith outside the church building, and therapy to just now start cautiously looking for a church that I don't feel sick walking into. So no. Covid didn't cause me to walk away. You did, church. ๐งต.

And of course there has been the very loud alignment with far right conservative Christian nationalist politics. Any church system who can condone the election of Trump and the open hatred he has inspired in our country is an absolute red flag in my book. ๐งต/

Then there was the onslaught of coverage on the sexual abuse issues and cover ups happening within the SBC. I don't doubt a single one because I've seen them happen in real time. I've been the one to bring abuse to light and get ignored and watch the victims face more shame than the abuser. ๐งต/

Add to that the way I watched church people join the discourse around BLM movements and racial tensions spreading through our country. The hatred and dehumanization that became normalized. It was sickening to watch. And all done right after sitting in the pews singing worship music. ๐งต/

If you were cautious during the pandemic and stopped attending in person, you were called a sheep and mocked. Mask wearing was met with side eyes and rolled eyes. Safety protocols were the topic of jokes. And if you asked about enforcing masks in church...whoah! Get back there woke Satan! ๐งต/

Many people, my family included, left and didn't come back because of how they saw the church handling the intense events that began during that time. How they were treated if they disagreed with how things were being handles. ๐งต/

As someone who started distancing themselves from church/southern Baptist in particular, I'd like to add my two cents on this thought process. If that were the case, your numbers would have rebounded after the pandemic. Maybe you'd lose a few from getting out of the habit, but not the majority. ๐งต/
