For gas masks, you're going to need something stronger than an N95, as those are mostly for repelling droplets. Full Face Resperators will be the best as it'll protect your breathing and your eyes.
However, you need a clean shaven face in order to maintain a good seal.

Also, yeah, as someone else suggested, use either lacross sticks to knock them away. Do not pick them up with your bare hands. I'd recommend a good hockey stick.
Keep as much skin covered as possible, and you can also use antacids to help reduce the effects of exposure to tear gas.

Also, for tear gas, you want a mix of malox and milk to best work on it, IIRC. Am I right on that?
