“Just having an enviable job, while not being a straight white man, is grounds for suspicion – especially if you have the audacity to champion lifting others up the ladder.”

“We won’t be their negroes,” John Adams once said, protesting the Stamp Act. To understand the embrace of Afrikaners as refugees, consider the longstanding fear of Blackness in the U.S. and the historic anxiety around the precarious status of minority rule. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/14/u...

Thousands of working people in New York City live in shelters, priced out of the rental market even as they earn $50,000 or more. Shameful. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/n...

My latest: Americans who do not share Trump’s vision for the country and have watched with growing rage and grief as prominent institutions and people have caved to him or failed to defend the values they claimed to stand for. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/06/o...

Jewish students at Columbia have chained themselves to a gate (already locked) to protest ICE detentions of student protestors. They accuse members of our board of trustees of providing information about students to ICE and are demanding accountability.

“ICE is checking documents on the subway. ICE is outside New York public libraries that hold English-as-a-second-language classes. ICE agents handcuffed a U.S. citizen who tried to intervene in a detention in Harlem.” www.nytimes.com/2025/04/02/o...

Breaking News: Susan Crawford, a liberal judge, won a pivotal Wisconsin Supreme Court seat despite $25 million in spending by Elon Musk on her opponent.

There is no American democracy without Black people.

Senator Cory Booker has now broken the record for the longest Senate Floor speech, previously held by Strom Thurmond (24 hours 18 minutes).

"I don't want a Disney vacation of our history! I don't a whitewashed history, I don't want a homogenized history. Tell me the wretched truth about America, because that speaks to our greatness" -- 20 hours into his speech, Cory Booker is spitting absolute 🔥

From thee David Blight: “The assumption that there is a standard, agreed-upon truth about the country’s past is a fantasy. But when declared by a sitting American president, it becomes a provocation and an insult.” www.nytimes.com/2025/03/31/o...

A few years ago I visited the National Museum of African American History & Culture with my grandparents. When we stepped out of the building my grandmother kept repeating the words “I lived it. I lived it. I lived it.” She’s still here. That history is still in her bones. You can never erase that.

Bottom line is fewer than 5% of undergraduate students are Black at Univ. of Michigan, a public school in a state that is more than 14% Black and has a pernicious history of racial discrimination, especially in housing. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/27/e...

… “Despite the years of labor she has put into building the two businesses, she insisted that she believed most women weren’t cut out for hard-charging careers. ‘I think when most women try to do that, they fail,” she said. “…it’s not really in their nature.’” www.nytimes.com/2025/03/21/s...

Rodney Taylor is a beloved Georgia barber who came to the United States from Liberia with his mother when he was only two years old. He applied for citizenship but was denied. But this year, ICE arrested him, locked him up, and has scheduled him to be deported to a faraway country he's never known.

For folks who don’t know, ethnic studies programs like African American/Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies and the like come directly from civil right era campus activism. Attempts to disempower such programs should be framed as attacks on civil rights same as much else rn.

This is the logic behind historical Jewish quotas, trans-exclusionary rules in sports, the Great Replacement conspiracy theory, and the anti-DEI (read: anti-Black) push in workplaces: life is zero-sum, white Christian men deserve it all, and anyone else succeeding is a failure of the natural order

My family issued the following after Medgar Evers was partially removed from the Arlington National Cemetery website under the direction of the Department of the Army. “It is a spit in the face to all who have served, honored, and fought for this country,” said Myrlie Evers. Full statement below:

“Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place of presidents, generals, Medal of Honor recipients and more than 400,000 service members and their families, has purged its website of material focused on Black, Hispanic, and female troops buried there” - shameful, even by Trump’s standards.

Letter signed by members of the Columbia History Department urging resistance to the Trump Administration's efforts to dictate university policy. "Should this control be realized, here or elsewhere, it would make any real historical scholarship, teaching, and intellectual community impossible."
