But when I last bought a pair (2 weeks ago or so) the product was completely different to what I’m wearing here in terms of fit, cut and the plastic used (for the worse)

Roll it up in a sausage, and put it in the washer along with everything else. Unfortunately I can’t wear cloth regularly because of work so we don’t deal with more than two dirty diapers at most, at a time.

I do most of the clean up duty with cloth.
I put a cheap large washcloth in the “party zone” of the diaper, on top of the boosters/liners. Once I’ve done the deed I’ll remove the washcloth, deposit most of what I can in the toilet, hand wash the cloth in a small bucket of water/detergent…
