Heads up! APA is urging anyone who cares about health and science to let their reps/senators know now that they should oppose the admin's murder budget. Easy to do here: www.votervoice.net/Shares/BAAAA... APA is plugged in. If they say NOW, listen! #StandUpForScience

JAMA Forum on the proposed NIH budget… jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

To put these top-line budget numbers in context, cuts of this magnitude would effectively mean no new grants in FY2026. The entire extramural budget would go to existing, continuing grants. An abject failure of American ambition. And a betrayal of our global leadership in health science innovation.

The President's Budget request as released yesterday will gut scientific research. Why should you care? 1) Science is fundamentally a jobs program. Many 100,000s are employed to do science and work for you, the US taxpayer.

Viewpoint in JAMA details the consequences of the proposed cuts to NIH: ❌15% reduction in new therapies ❌reduction in life expectancy by 83M life years in the US = $8.2T ❌loss of $51B in economic output annually All to save $20B annually. The math ain't mathin.' jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Are you a PI of a federal grant cancelled by the Trump administration? Please share your info with the Democratic Staff of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, who launched this portal yesterday to track funding cancellations 🔭🧪 forms.office.com/pages/respon...

Could be huge. Especially for those terminated in the anti-DEI purge. "...NIH will allow individuals whose mentored career development awards prematurely ended on or after January 1, 2025, to be eligible to apply for a new mentored career development award" grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

How do you decide which theory, model, or framework (TMF) should guide your next implementation project? Our team has just published SELECT-IT in @implementsci.bsky.social — a four-step meta-framework that turns that question into a replicable process: doi.org/10.1186/s130... @jgrimshaw.bsky.social

The US does not have a universal single-payer healthcare system. Statements by health authorities greatly influence vaccine access because dropping vaccine recommendations give insurance companies an excuse not to cover them. Vaccines are not accessible if you can’t afford them.

Major update to #SCIMaP visualization of impacts of cuts to federally supported health research. Map now includes information on future economic losses (impact of proposed reduction of NIH IDC to 15%) and current economic losses (impact of terminated NIH grants). scienceimpacts.org

There is a new Executive Order that is closely related to many of the topics promoted in the science reform movement. It deserves a close read as it will surely have implications for how some promoted reforms are implemented in policy and practice. My hot take 🧵 www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Grant freezes versus terminations feel different, but they have the same practical effect. We should start treating freezes as terminations, both of which can be undone by HHS / NIH whenever they want—or by court order if they refuse. They’re all illegal.

Data request: any APHA or UAW members impacted by NIH grant terminations are encouraged to visit the link below by MONDAY 5/19. The goal is to provide the court with info about which grants have been affected and the number of people impacted if the judge issues relief in the matter of APHA v NIH.

An under-appreciated aspect of a Medicaid work requirement is the enormous administrative expense involved in managing reporting by enrollees of their work hours or eligibility for an exemption.

Extremely proud of PhD student Laura Caci, who has led this work on "Organizational readiness for change: A systematic review of the healthcare literature" - more exciting publications to follow! #ImpSci journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Foreign adversaries are pumping disinformation into our social media networks, but we know very little about the consequences let alone how to ameliorate them. For years, Republicans have harassed us for studying this. Now, NSF has canceled all funding. It’s a profound lapse in national security.

All NIH and NSF grants for my entire team--and for all of Harvard, I guess?--have been terminated. As provocative as that sounds, the practical effect is probably not much. Everything was already frozen. 🤷‍♂️ On the upside, it makes tracking terminated grants easier. No more guesswork at Harvard!

Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3 www.science.org/content/arti...

one thing I really like about @cogscisociety.bsky.social is they disclose publicly the rough costs of running their conference this is not a trivial decision, many orgs don't do so, and it provides useful context for "why should it cost $600 to see my science friends" (here's why!)

⚖️ Terminated NIH grant litigation update: There's a hearing on a motion for preliminary injunction today at 11:30a EDT in Mass. v RFK et al, a case brought by some states against HHS. This is 1 of 2 diff. cases on this topic. I'll be live-tweeting it later this morning. Check back on this thread.

Given focuses on health equity, global health, and HIV, implementation science has been hit particularly hard by grant cancellations, accounting for 7% of all NIH cancellations

A lawsuit led by the Washington state attorney general offers an unprecedented view of the termination of more than 600 NIH grants, including transgender research grants threatened by Trump’s executive orders. @anniewaldman.bsky.social

1/6. One thing I’ve often found interesting in research on perceptions of health disparities is the frequency with which the perspectives of the communities that bear the brunt of those disparities are omitted. In our latest @commhsp.bsky.social paper, we highlight what gets lost when that happens.

The current administration’s narrative that Harvard (and all universities) feel “entitled” to federal dollars misleads the public. Nor are these funds a “privilege” 1/n

Remember the awesome COVID-19 dashboard Hopkins created and populated during the pandemic? They are back but this time tracking measles

$500 million is… less than 1.25% of the NIH’s 2024 budget. When I say there is no capacity to absorb the shock, I mean it.

Trump admin just released proposed budget. Science gets eviscerated: NIH slashed by 43%. CDC slashed by 55% NIMHD, Fogarty, NCCIH, and NINR defunded entirely. www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/u...

🔔BREAKING🔔 The NSF has frozen all research grant awards—cutting off life-saving science midstream and demanding ideological screenings for future funding. This is censorship disguised as oversight. Here’s how you can help us spread the word ➡️🧵(1/3): www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Current NIH funding slump represents: - Research labs closing - PhD students abandoning their dreams. - Trial participants left to their own devices mid study. - A halt to scientific progress and innovation for cancer, chronic and infectious diseases. - Minority health research terminated. Etc.

“However bad everyone on the outside thinks it is, it is a million times worse. They’re dismantling and destroying everything.” Read, share, respond. Call your representatives. The health and well-being of Americans & America's innovation economy are at stake. www.science.org/content/arti...

NEW: An NIH policy coming in the next week will target — and at least temporarily stop — funding outside the US, threatening thousands of projects and collaborations on topics like infectious diseases and cancer. Some NIH staff have already been told to hold all subaward funds for foreign labs.

A well-deserved fellowship for my friend @margaretcrane.bsky.social! psych.med.brown.edu/news/2025-04...

Dear Tenured Facility, Over the past 100 days my career trajectory has turned into a question mark. At best, the TT job market just got even crazier, at worst there won’t be research career options in the US when I finish my PhD. It took me a while to find my path and I love being a scientist. 1/x

So a clip with me on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talking about indirect costs

Nearly 800 NIH grants have been terminated so far, including some focused on HIV and AIDS, trans health, and COVID-19, after researchers were told their work was no longer an agency priority. https://cbsn.ws/3YkDndI

⛔ NIH ended ALL of my grants mid-project, given LGBTQ health focus 🏳️‍🌈 ⚖️ So what am I doing? Suing RFK, Jr. As one team member shared in this story👇: "The threats to our work don’t just make me fear for my career — they make me fear for my safety.“ #SaveDemocracy #SupportScience #PublicHealth
