I wish there had been access to graphic novels like there is today. I would have adored Botticelli’s Apprentice by Ursula Murray Husted.

In that case I’d go with my top choice of Neill Cameron’s Mega Robo Bros or Donut Squad cause they’re both genius and my 10 yo loves them. 😁

What kind of games do they enjoy? I’d definitely point them towards Jason Shiga’s Adventure Game comics. They might also enjoy Gamerville by Johnny Christmas or the Dungeon Club comics by Molly Knox Ostertag. But if you give me an idea of what genres of games they enjoy I can suggest more.

I’ve been so excited about it I accidentally ordered more than one copy. And I enjoyed the others so much on audio I couldn’t resist. So there’s no need for competition on who reads first in this house! 😂

I am listening to, and thoroughly enjoying, Silverborn: The Mystery of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend.

Gosh, I couldn’t listen at that speed. One of the few positive consequences of chronic fatigue is I can allow myself the leisure to sit and listen to audiobooks. 😌

It’s read brilliantly by Gemma Whelan. Would highly recommend the whole series on audio.

Supporting teachers to diversify their class texts and supporting kids to read more for pleasure are both important. And I’m sure anything we can do to help with both is appreciated by incredibly busy teachers.

Love Glasgow Boys! She’s such a talented young author. Picked up My Name is Samim for my son’s birthday but may need to borrow it from him before he reads it himself!

I find it hard to keep up and keep up and it’s my main hobby, as well as part of my job! It’s understandable that many teachers go back to familiar texts they’ve taught before and have loads of resources for. But with reading for pleasure falling off a cliff we all need to do more where we can.

That’s it. And obviously as book charity part of what we want/need to do is to make that easier for folk. There’s so much being published and it’s understandable that kids and adults alike often don’t know where to start.

No holiday for me sadly, but this week I read Blitzers by Alastair Chisholm which I loved. Also working my way through The Uninvited by Ross MacKenzie which is really thought provoking stuff so far. Also listening to Jessica Townsend’s Silverborn and it’s such a joy to be back in Nevermoor.

That’s exactly it. And getting the thoughts of friends/relatives, who are often the ones doing the buying, is so important. We know kids often find choosing books tricky so the more we can support the gatekeepers to choose a wider selection of great books the better. Thanks for your help!

I like a good hardback for graphic novels and non-fiction but tend to find them unwieldy for fiction. I also buy so many books that I tend to avoid the cost of hardbacks where possible. But something I’m looking forward to, like the latest Nevermoor, I’ll buy as soon as it’s out either way!

Ooh, sorry, missed this post yesterday. Love Stitch Head! I try to put all the comics I love on the #KidsGN📚💬 thread if you want to keep an eye out for ideas? But here’s a few lists I’ve made previously in case there’s anything you don’t know already.

Yes, I’m very much the same. Though being dyslexic plays its part too. I love prose when I get into it but it’s so much easier picking up a GN and getting started.

There’s certainly still a long way to go. And yes we’re way behind the rest of Europe. But the number of comics I’m being sent through in the book data I add to the Bookzilla app has increased dramatically over the past year. That’s a list of all the recently published kids titles.

I think not so much putting off as exacerbating an existing fear of long pages of text. But equally those kids would possibly not read anything at all without access to graphic novels.

I do think publishers are now realising how much they’re missing by not investing in graphic novels and the size of the untapped market. I see it more as a levelling than an overtake. But either way it’s great to see comics getting more investment and recognition.

I think the immediacy of comics is more accessible for many readers, and can, in some cases, exacerbate a fear of reading prose. I say this both from my own experience as a reader and the children I’ve worked with. But personally I think there will always be an appetite for both comics and prose.
