I repeat my appeal to any picture editors who don't want to promote Farage: stop using images that project gleeful, gurning isn't-it-all-a-great-laugh energised triumphalism.

Wrote about this many years ago on Twitter, but your actual goal should be 5 trains/buses an hour - so a 12 minute interval. This breaks a couple of important psychological barriers for people, based on research by TfL (London's transport operator). Will explain. 🧵 /1

If you can't handle me at my 🛻🪴🪴 you don't deserve me at my 🪱🍎.

🧵In March I wrote about how Trump's attacks on science & universities followed the authoritarian playbook & set out Qs as warning signs for escalation. 🚨 THESE ARE NOW HAPPENING This 🧵is on how those warning sign Qs have been realised full post: christinapagel.substack.com/p/warning-si... 1/15

I am having the worst day and I would like to thank the man who is sitting parked in his car jamming out to music with a pair of maracas just absolutely getting down for giving me a smile and turning my whole afternoon around thank you sir

"Did you get your unlimited breadsticks like in Dachau?"

A little while ago, my parents' cat Bridget went missing. As the weeks dragged on, they became extremely worried. My dad devised a way to distract himself: he began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time and popping up in some of art and music's most iconic scenes.

I remember all too little of the interviews I did with rock stars when I was briefly employed as the music critic for a national newspaper, but there is this.

I'm sharing Colin Fray's awesome commentary because the recording runs out on BBC Sounds right after the first Brighton pen!! Can you have a word @emilymaytv.bsky.social ? #nffc www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

1/7. In case you haven’t been following, here is a short summary of the misnamed Russian-American "peace process" regarding Ukraine.

Growing queasiness about benefit cuts…Here’s my own MP @marykfoymp.bsky.social going public.

tour de force from @ashorguk.bsky.social chair @copddoc.bsky.social here. LRB piece tells the story of one of the pioneers of the tobacco control movement: www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2025/ma... Though I don't intend to inject myself with nicotine anytime soon there is much to admire in his tenacity

Once again for the love of god just put taxes up, you'll have to anyway before this parliament is out so do it now, cite defence as the reason, lean into the fact the world has changed & govt must too. (Me and @johnharris1969.bsky.social discussed this on the Guardian Politics Weekly pod btw..

Just a random reminder that trickle-down economics was invented by conservatives in the 1980s to justify massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. It’s been nothing short of a disaster.

Former Conservative MP and British Attorney General Dominic Grieve:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... This is such a terrible, rambling take with zero context or insight. Political punditry as football punditry. Awful, and the BBC needs to do so much better or it’s normalising and validating Trump. Much better from Jeremy Bowen, who gave history & context.

This is a great thread - “When truth is no longer a shared foundation, power shifts to those who control the most compelling narrative - no matter how detached from reality it is.”

Donald Trump's Director of National Intelligence and one of his Deputy Chiefs of Staff. For the hundredth time these people are not our allies and pretending otherwise is a hiding for nothing

Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts. Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

A reminder. Trump could say nothing about tariffs on the UK today and announce them tomorrow. Or vice versa. There is no logic. Thus reporting success or failure applies to a single moment.

1. Background to the epochal change in German and European politics after the election. Merz, the presumed next Chancellor has said that Europe is setting out to "achieve its independence from the US, step by step." @abenewman.bsky.social and I explain the background in our book, Underground Empire

New public management doesn’t save money. It costs taxpayers a small fortune to do basic things. Once state capacity is abolished, private sector rent seeking goes into overdrive.

I’m in Munich and people keep asking me to decode Vance’s speech. OK: In Vance English “free speech” means “Let Musk run your elections” and “democracy” means “let Russia run your elections.” Now move on. 2025 is about what Europeans do, not what Americans say.

What a day! Flying over Bamburgh Castle this morning, looking up at the stars tonight. #grimupnorth

Today the National Trust launched a 10-year strategy with ambitious plans for nature & climate. Almost every paper reported positively - from the Mirror to the Express. Even the Mail. Only one outlet used the word ‘woke’ & framed climate as a ‘culture wars’ issue. The BBC. Why? California’s burning.

On this day 50 years ago, Brian Clough walked into our club and changed everything #nffc

So, you may ask, why do I get so angry about the new liberal spin on RFK Jr, as in, "he gets some things right, so let's collaborate on those" or "we have to work with him because he has a huge following we need to reach"? Because I've seen this movie before. 1/

Great #NFFC win over Villa - but can we reform VAR? Commentators saying “you can’t argue with facts”. I don’t believe that you can accurately determine to the nearest pixel when the ball leaving the foot of the passer can be any one of many frames. Should have “referees call” for uncertainty

Congratulations to Rosie Baker (Public Health South Tees alumna!) for winning an award at NE Public Health Conference 2024 #nephconf24 for her work on Women’s Health. Well done also to Alice Beadle for her award winning work on reducing gambling harms across the NE

Great panel discussion at NE Public Health Conference 2024 #nephconf24 focussing on innovation, communities & collaboration
