If we only frame this as a partisan crisis, we miss the structural threat: a breakdown in how truth is recognised, shared, and defended. That’s the deeper fight.

Really moving. Beautifully devastating.

Also - this need to know more stuff increasingly makes me feel I know nothing as you define yourself by what you don’t know

“I think the humanities could do with more of a balance between the people who know more than anyone else about one thing and the people who see connections between vastly disparate things.”
I think this is true of science too - the connections & relationships are where the interesting stuff happens

What I find most annoying is the default acceptance of longstanding tropes (deregulation, wasteful government, benefits cuts, trade deals etc) without any great evidence they will actually make a difference (most likely the opposite) - this is the extreme orthodoxy.

Lippmann warned that democracy only works if the public has access to accurate information. But today, people don’t just lack good information - they actively reject it in favour of what fits their worldview, because their entire information ecosystem reinforces those beliefs.

We'll see how this plays out but from what I can see, this is laying the groundwork for a bunch of very bad ideas:
-defunding evidence-based research
-suspending vaccine access for unnecessary safety studies
-replacing medicine w/ supplements
-discrediting scientists

Populist radical-right parties are exploiting declining confidence in democratic institutions, drawing on misinformation to destabilize mainstream politics.
Misinformation and radical-right populism must be understood as inextricable and synergistic—two expressions of the same political moment. 6/

Addressing racism. That sort of thing. Otherwise integration is just a dog whistle. Also maybe integrate the upper classes into the rest of society for once.

People move.
We always have, we always will.
But, Britain NEEDS people.
Any competent government could manage refugee protection to all our benefit. #r4today
