I wonder if men also do better on those metrics when [other] men aren't around.

Nowadays it's "Kids, don't play outside!"

Their data show that people think philanthropy will fund the gaps lost by federal funding for science. OH. NO. We know this is extremely unlikely. The gap is simply too large. People overestimate how big philanthropy is.

One of the weird things about behavioral economics is that you might have gotten more takers if you had charged like it's a premium service. As Thomas Paine said, "What we obtain too cheap we esteem too lightly."

3. The legs of Philadelphians, who tend to walk lots of places, generally look fantastic by the standards of a city that devastated its walkability to cater to the automobile.

How hard did @thewheatgerm.bsky.social lobby to have the game called "SNEK" instead?

Common misconception. Thomas Guides (or Tommy G as he likes to be called) is actually a 38 year old Philadelphian whose favorite show is Deep Space Nine.
comment in response to post
(That must seem like a completely unhinged thing to post if you've never seen Deep Space Nine, but fortunately for my reputation, no such people are on Bluesky.)

Allamaraine, bet your ass Allamaraine, move your mass Allamaraine, go touch grass Allamaraine, and then you pass!

(And the rest of the crew could teach their own games. Jadzia teaches Tongo; The Boys teach various racket sports; Jake and Nog teach Dom-jot; etc. Quark wants to open a Dabo franchise only to find he's banned from the Wadi homeworld and spends the whole mission on the ship because *consequences*.)

I am not, because there is nothing to apologize for. The only thing the writers should apologize for is not making a follow up episode where Sisko goes to THEIR home planet to teach them baseball in a games-based cultural exchange at the request of their ambassador.

I'm 99.9% sure this is a joke but I'm going to start using polygeese anyway.

Haven't seen this COVID memorial before, but there's one in Frankfort, KY (covidmemorial.ky.gov/Pages/index....) & one in Boston that was put up by the local Jewish community (jcam.org/jcam-dedicat...). They're still rare, but I like to see more. It's not even over and folks are already forgetting.

Are you a really fast reader or are you somehow better at scanning for interesting papers than almost everyone else? Either way, I really appreciate you sharing your good finds.

I thought the rule was I could be as unhinged as I wanted on main until we hit 10m people.

I mean...no?

I had the exact same reaction. This is an amazing premise for a satirical millennial horror movie. The sourdough consumes those who would have consumed it, then replaces them with dough-versions who walk around like zombies pretending COVID is just like a cold.

Feel free to spam me with random thoughts and utter nonsense. I consider it my civic duty to support election day workers.

I'm not a morning person either, though I've occasionally managed to get to sleep early. Chamomile tea and a soothing nature documentary helps me. I've heard putting screens away also helps, but as a millennial that's basically a nonstarter.

Ah, there is stuff on that, but the results are kind of mixed! You have a "trusted friend/family" effect, but we're finding that there's also a "strength of weak ties" effect (e.g. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...). Heading to bed soon but definitely happy to connect later.

There's a whole body of social networks research modeling disinformation as contagion, kind of the same way a virus spreads. Though most of the data are from online networks, not close interpersonal ties. Happy to talk more! And maybe point you to some experts who do this more directly if you need.

:) Well then you're welcome and/or I'm so sorry, depending on how it goes and what else you had to do today.

Oh phew 😅

Ah yeah sorry lol was trying to just summarize briefly under a character limit, not explain it super well. Didn't think anyone would really care all that much TBH, but I'm happy to expand on anything if there's real interest!

Different balance theory. Basically: triangles need 0 or 2 negative ties. Yours had 1, which Heider said was unstable in humans. The enemy of your enemy is your friend, and so is the friend of your friend. As Harley warms up to you, we get transitive closure in your friendship network.
comment in response to post
I love this new chapter too! The fact that Harley is warming up to you supports a theory I had back when I was an academic & briefly considering specializing in animal social networks (basically: Heider's Balance Theory applies to cats).

I never get tired of this story. It's basically part of my essential Bluesky lore.

I kind of liked it better when there was an age cap for the big Excel competitions, because for adults, winning ≈$5k and a belt is nothing compared to what you can earn with world-class Excel skills, but for teens and college students the title (or a near miss) could really be life-changing.

Montreal's 1 would be a top contender for me too. Toronto's 1 is no joke either.

Huh, interesting. But the taste... My latest cereal trend is Cheerio Mixing. There are so many kinds of Cheerios now and many are better in a 50/50 or 67/33 mixture with a partner flavor.

...why?

Honestly, my rejection coping mechanisms usually involve way more fantastical conspiracy theories than that.
