85 miles south, in Houston,
@thetimes.com visited a women's jail where inmates awaiting trial can avoid the harsher conditions of a higher security prison and reduce their sentence if they agree to take part in an intensive education and rehabilitative regime.

Jimmy Delgado, 52, spent the first 13 of his 25 years at Estelle in solitary confinement.
He was finally able to move out of solitary when he agreed to renounce his gang membership and take part in an intensive rehabilitative programme

@thetimes.com visited 2 prisons in Texas where inmates can reduce their jail sentence through 'good time credits' by behaving well and working 5 days a week
Not all qualify but there are other incentives for inmates to use their time in jail productively, even for those on death row
