This is true. I'm curious how viable that would be absent the narrative of "carpet baggers" who came in and were painted as scapegoats for all the South's woes. Probably still overall viable, but I'd guess just enough simmering resentment that a shove could bring the rotten edifice down.

My own view is that the planters would begin disenfranchisement of whites if they saw any of their power taken away. Racism can only paper over being powerless for so long, especially if the planters start buying up all the land and making whites share croppers.

Oh boy would they! I think though that the ruling planter elite was so desirous to hold onto power they would begin disenfranchisement of whites if they started to see trouble at the ballot box. This is especially true in the Deep South. Racism can only paper over so much powerlessness I think.

It's fundamentally insane that you can have someone agree with you that the modern meat industry is inhumane and then in the same breath threaten to kill you if you take away their cheeseburger.

The New Republic was always going to have problems. Having it be stable would mean that there's no good stories to tell in the setting, but going the completely different direction as the sequel trilogy did may be too far. There must be a balance! 2/2

you see this all the time on Instagram: “your vote doesn’t matter and you’re a rube for thinking it does”
I think the underlying cause is that lots of dumb people think that cynicism is a sign of intelligence when in reality it’s the opposite
