New blog post: "I think I understand why PhDs say they want to open a bakery or do baking as a hobby" (~2 min read) matthras.com/2025/06...

Just finished watching The Accountant (movie, 2016), because I saw somewhere it mentioned mathematicians and autism representation. Can confirm autism depiction is accurate. Writing is excellent and well thought out, nothing overly hamfisted. Enjoyable spin on typical action.

First World Problem: I browse various lace crochet patterns for ideas and to figure out how to design my own, but I'm so BORED at the symmetry. Symmetry means predictable means boring for me. My brain craves the novelty of wanting to go "Hm? I wonder how that's made..." 😭

Currently making Japanese curry without potatoes (which adds starch to thicken the sauce), so added a cornstarch slurry. Mmmm sufficiently thicc curry sauce πŸ˜‹

Really loved the (SDH) subtitles in Game Changer S7E5 "The Drinking Game", the non-spoken components had additional descriptive adjectives e.g. "players cheering wildly", and during the tongue-twister game they also spelt out mispronunciations e.g. "Urkel-lele" 😊

I finally finished stiffening my yarn bowl and it FINALLY clicked for me why yarn bowls were designed a specific way that wasn't considered in my design and now I'm fuming at myself again πŸ’’ /flails (Pics later!)

I'm trying to figure out a lace crochet pattern for the aperiodic hat with Penrose kite fractals inside it and I just realised I'm probably solving some kind of edge-covering graph theory problem πŸ˜’

Peak "I spent X hours today trying to figure out this problem and the solution made me realise I could've done it an easier way" moment today. SIGH. I think my body is a tad emotionally exhausted from being angry at myself. Mrgh. πŸ™„

TIL they're called "curves of pursuit" And unfortunately I'm already trying to figure out how to do like a lace crochet version of various ones I'm seeing online... 😬

My brain is unnecessarily obsessed with wanting to finish this proposal for an accessibility conference and it's like "Why, brain, why?! There are most definitely more important and closer-to-home things you could be doing!!" πŸ§ πŸ”« At least I only have myself to blame, really. πŸ™„

...I do this in the Discord servers I interact with others in πŸ˜…

I feel like any optimisation algorithm that'll make me go "Wow!" at this point would be anything based on pure maths concepts that is essentially "taking a shortcut through higher dimensions". Grumblegrumble.

Getting a flu+COVID jab today because too many people around me are getting sick and it's giving me the heebie jeebies. Hooray, I'm going to feel like utter crap tomorrow! πŸ™ƒ As if I wasn't feeling crappy today from overworking myself this past week!

This feels like the weirdest thing to appreciate but I really love that Gianmarco Soresi's (stand-up comedian) Youtube videos+shorts (that I've seen so far) have on-video captions, and they have been 100% accurate and also include difficult-to-hear audience input. 1/2

I was telling mum a few days ago that I couldn't remember which of "in vivo" vs "in vitro" was which (body vs test tube?) Then mum reminded me about what IVF stood for. 🀯 /facepalm

Local Discord server does a Wednesday WIPpies (work-in-progress) check-in in their "arts & crafts" channel, so y'all also get to see updates on my lace crochet.

Have you submitted to arXiv recently? What was the biggest annoyance in your way?

Lately I've been addicted to watching stand-up crowd-work comedy (shout out to Gianmarco Soresi, his Youtube has lots of videos!) and being able to make (hilarious) connections between seemingly disparate ideas or recently talked about concepts is definitely key to good comedy.

Lunchtime discussion with the usual crowd drifted onto the topic of chess and now I'm itching to get myself a set to play with others, hmm. Playing online/digital doesn't give the same feeling as physical chess pieces 🫀 I guess it's more about human presence for me.

omg I just read someone describing sharps/flats as kiki/bouba and it's like someone opened a door right in front of me that I didn't know was there but it was there the whole time

The "biology" part of my mathematical biology apparently had a biochemistry component and my biology (technically regenerative medicine) supervisor WARNED me not to fall into that rabbit hole, but little does she know what I've been doing my entire life... πŸ₯²

🧠: Look, yes, that weighted hugging panda plushie in your Instagram ads is mightily tempting to buy, but look! You have a bunch of yarn and weighted pellets, why not crochet YOUR OWN weighted hugging plushie?! Me: Siiiiigh I guess I will πŸ™„

I just realised a false assumption and an overlooked equation in my modelling. I should be glad that I've realised them but my perfectionist brain is going to stew in self-hate for the next couple of hours, ugh.

Brain self-sabotaged itself today, ugh. Have recovered, at least!

Successfully used artificial last minute panic to smash out two long-enough-hanging tasks on my to-dos before a planned appointment. Didn't realise the planned appointment was 30 minutes later because I never checked my calendarπŸ˜‘

Finished watching Netflix's "The Chair" and it's just a very solid single story arc that expresses a lot of topical things with just the right amount of caricature, not over the top. Very well written, hilarious in its own ways, didn't overstay its welcome. Defs recommended.

It's finally cold enough here for me to break open the vacuum-sealed bag of winter clothes. THE CHEESY MATHS BEANIES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK.

This morning's PhD work has mostly been re-organising a set of notes for a mathematical model but I'm surprised at how well it's unsticking all the random ruts/issues I've mentally had about it but was unable to enunciate or even figure out in the first place. Yay, clarity!

Elder Millennials getting a sore reminder for getting their prostate checked, I guess!
