There were a few hundred people protesting the ICE actions in California today. Most probably lived in the neighborhood that had been raided by armed, uniformed men who looked like soldiers and not police. The idea that the response to this 2,000 National Guard is fucking insane.

A state's Guard has not been federalized like this over the governor's objection since 1965.

Let’s be very clear: Los Angeles is the perfect place for this to play out for the Trumpists. The Trumpists hate California and hate Los Angeles and a vast amount of their base feels the same — even the Trumpists here, who wallow in hating the place they live. /1

The most striking thing about the LA protests is how many people just dropped everything to show up and yell at federal agents. There are people in suits, and carrying dogs, and wearing flip flops or bike helmets. These are not people who planned to do this today. But there they are.

Hope other countries are excited for the LA Olympics!

jesus christ lmao

This is @melbuer.bsky.social on Sean’s account, posting here since it’s his video: the moment that Sean and @ryannemena.bsky.social were injured by what may have been a tear gas canister fired from a line of HSI officers in Paramount, CA.

The party that subjected Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, Michael Byrd, Ruby Freeman, Shaye Moss, Ashley Thomas and countless other public servants to death threats demand that you to stop posting the names of the ICE agents who are snatching innocent people off the street and disappearing them.

The LA protests will trigger a drumbeat of "law and order" messaging from the White House and their media allies as a prelude to invoking the Insurrection Act. This is entirely predictable, and any Dem or media outlet that facilitates this narrative will be aiding Trump's authoritarian project.

Canada Post wants to create a new class of flexible, part-time worker that will better compete with Amazon and implement “dynamic routing” so delivery routes can be changed on the fly. It’s a good example of how Amazon degrades workers’ rights even beyond its walls. Workers are right to push back.

This guy is a stupid liar so grain of salt and all that but if they actually bring in the National Guard and/or demand Newsom sign off, hoo boy it's gonna get real bad real quick

if you're not tuned into US politics you may see "LA County Sheriffs Department" and think that's just what they call their normal police but they are actually a network of violent organized white supremacist gangs with tattoos, a code of silence, initiation rites that require police brutality, etc

Any chance these trains have grain cars…? 🤔

Protesting is a delicate balance of ritualized violence, where they bet they can scare people off and the people attempt to make that as expensive as possible. And, every now and then you get someone like this who just tears through their mirage of strength so beautifully.

Well this is quite something. Very few people - especially if they’ve had access to power - have this much spine. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

The "it's not fascism" intellectuals looks pretty silly right about now.

the LAPD and Rodney King were a kind of primal scene for the post Cold War US. here comes the repetition compulsion...

Fascinating dip into the deep history of drones.

The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world. They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

i have this picture of fred shuttlesworth in my class, his house just got bombed, and it’s equal parts can you believe this shit and equal parts well i guess we go on. i think it’s one of the best pictures of america ever taken.

Not even the first time

One of those moments when you're staring at a picture and it stares back at you from a history book

The next stability risks in the US relate to how far riots and unrest against ICE raids in larger cities attract heavily armed far right paramilitary cosplayers who want to impose a MAGA agenda on hostile urban populations

(I hesitate to say and think this, especially online, but the scenes from LA/Minneapolis/etc. have civil war vibes. the civic population against a militarized police state that is carrying out ethnic cleansing and kidnapping and disappearing people. power to the people)

Really didn't take long at all for the darkest predictions to come to pass. And I'd wager a good majority of his voters still don't even know, thanks to a media very dedicated to processing reality for them.

Has any Democratic official issued a statement yet?

What. Are. We. Doing?

Me, a squishy New Deal liberal, watching this shit

Ukraine is doing some serious Ian Fleming shit right now. Drone ambush from grain hoppers taking out a train full of military tanks and other equipment?!

Even if you use an LLM for retrieval-augmented generation, IT’S STILL AN LLM and is still designed to produce LINGUISTICALLY correct responses not FACTUALLY correct ones. That’s why Lexis and Westlaw AI still hallucinate. You’re better off with good ol’ Boolean searches.

đź’Ą BREAKING: Ukrainian drones flew out of grain train car hatches and destroyed 13 Russian tanks and more than a 100 armored vehicles and other equipment being transported by the Russian train in occupied southern Ukraine. The hatches appear to have been opened by remote control, again.

They’re not behaving as if they’re in a four-year term. They’re behaving as if they’re in an everlasting dictatorship. Are we all clear on this?

What the fuck is the point of paying money to a police department if they won’t protect people from hostile masked kidnappers?

I hate the caricature of Americans as couch potatoes who don’t do anything about fascism. People in LA and NYC are doing the international legacy of stuff like the Battle of Cable Street proud.

Aggrieved whites pretending they only lost out because of "unfair advantages" to minorities is an old script. The Bakke ruling against racial quotas came after Allan Bakke was rejected by 12 different med schools. He sued the *one* that had a racial quota, arguing that and that alone kept him out.

friendly reminder to folks that this can be both what Stephen Miller wants and also not a sufficient reason to let them do whatever illegal gestapo shit they feel like

This may be as much about developing pretext for Insurrection Act as it is about trying to get the numbers up for massive deportation. This is Stephen Miller's war on America, and he is quite comfy with being wildly unpopular. He's been a dick his entire life. Will Trump care? Tis the question

Judging by the scenes of tear gas and ICE vehicles ramming a crowd in LA, Miller got his wish. I hope he chokes on it.

I suspect a lot of this equipment won’t leave DC after the participation parade.
