Weirdly, the Fall of Civilizations podcast about ancient empires that have collapsed has been kind of helping. Human society has been on some serious roller coasters in the past, and they didn't foresee either the good or the awful things that we have now.

I think the moral is still that people shouldn't be running around with guns. As a Canadian, I found this story completely bonkers, like the idea of volunteer protest marshals carrying guns was insane to me, but also, what are they supposed to do if counter-protestors might show up armed?

Obviously there are problems with Canadian policing too, but I can't get over how weird the idea of cops hiding their faces is.

An absolutely shocking abandonment of environmental policy.

I mostly feel the same, but there are still tiny pockets of decent, human activity even in our contemporary hellscape. Between bouts of depression, I've been making a podcast where I interview the folks operating these orgs here in Toronto called Future Mending Radio. www.futuremending.com/podcast

It's probably higher, because I guessed, conservatively that the average cars per household was 1.2, but it's probably higher since there's probably lots of households with 3+ cars and this article says 92% have at least one car.

My concern is that , as more and more content is AI slop, the AI trained on today's internet will be trained on its own hallucinations and this cycle will just get worse and worse.

As a Canadian, I remember reading announcements from US universities telling their foreign students to hurry back ahead of Trump's inauguration because they might have trouble at the border afterwards and I thought --- uh? isn't that the opposite of what you should be advising people to do?

Degrowth doesn't mean no growth. It means not pursuing growth for growth's sake. It would likely mean growth in many areas (like housing) that need growth and less growth in some areas (like investments in making phones more addictive) that do not.

Do bank robbers provide a 'service' to banks?

Why must we do dangerous and irrational things that won't work to please man-babies in SUVs who refuse to admit that drivers create traffic?

Sorry about that!

Thanks for that reminder on the end! I sometimes hear people complaining about the impacts of the wealthiest 10%, especially in academia, and wonder if they know that are probably in, or very close, to that slice from a global perspective.
