Lads! If you have ever spent *any time at all* in the company of police officers, then you will know that the idea that the cops ignored abuse rings out of mortal terror of being called racist was obvious horseshit immediately, the day the first headlines were published.

Hey @designthinking.lol please remove yourself from my brain.

Lots of commentary on this piece already, all of which I agree with. For historians, research is a fundamental part of writing. To farm it out to AI changes the nature of this intellectual process in fundamental ways. And as Stacy Schiff points out, it also takes all the fun out of it.

So, me giving invited lectures abroad on behalf of my employer has not been accepted as an "extenuating circumstance" for missing an exam offered by that same employer, as "work commitments" don't count.

Getting the gals together!

When you think of it, chastity is anti-Semitic and harmful bullshit which never should have been invented and any proper feminist movement should seek to abolish it.

It's pretty obvious that a lot of US mainstream media either doesn't recognise authoritarianism or doesn't want to call it out. Either way, it's an excellent way to destroy trust in your institution.

"i asked grok" "i asked chagpt" yeah well I asked a rare books librarian and they found things I didn’t even know I was looking for, while answering questions about provenance

97% of extremist-related murders in the U.S. in 2024 were linked to right-wing extremists. It’s not a political movement anymore - it’s a hobby for failed men with too much testosterone and not enough brain cells.

I turned to my partner after we watched this and said "it's weird they didn't mention anything about McVeigh's ideology at all".

I've been inspired by @mrjamesob.bsky.social to respond to headlines with a quick internet search. It took me an astonishing 52 seconds to find out that the school was financially unsound long before the VAT rise.. #stoplazyjournalism www.standard.co.uk/news/educati...

The radicalization of the American right is THE story of US politics over the last four decades and political reporters are still not allowed to talk about it

Oh lol so he's definitely gonna win huh?

Good job absolutely no-one currently has to wait for a GP appointment, and all GPs have loads of spare time! (This is government by metrics! Reduce hospital waiting lists (by making GP ones longer!) Reduce immigration numbers (by cutting student visas)! No-one cares what the numbers really mean.

According to the latest WaPo/Schar School poll, Trump’s handling of deportations has 37% approval, 52% disapproval. And Quinnipiac has it at 40% approval, 56% disapproval. But @facethenation.bsky.social insists “public approval is so high on deportation.”

Orwell follows this up, of course, with an immortal line: "Why is the goose-step not used in England? There are, heaven knows, plenty of army officers who would be only too glad to introduce some such thing. It is not used because the people in the street would laugh."

Helpful to some folx in #bookhistory as well!

Anyone who says LLM-AIs "are tools" are lying, misinformed or stupid. No alternatives.

the trajectory of crypto from anti-state/anti-fiat challenge to literal sponsor of the guns that back fiat currency, incredible stuff

Absolutely losing it over this soldier just carrying a drone

I didn't know @lottelydia.bsky.social had started treading the boards!

One of the great tragedies of what has happened to the media is that the expectation is always for them to say if something is “beneficial”, which is speculative madeup bullshit, instead of “right or wrong”, which can also be speculative but involves people having a soul and feeling guilt about evil

The damage caused by liberalism is in precisely this dynamic: they absorb all the oppositional energy that emerges in the population naturally in response to the impact of conservative policy, and then throw it away, leaving people even more frustrated and bitter.

The Democratic Party, sucking up all the energy of the US antiwar movement in 2007-8 and converting it into support for over twelve more years of Afghan War, a conflict they had been told two years earlier was doomed and pointless.

It would absolutely be a mistake to use either having had bottom surgery or possessing a GRC to decide which trans people are going to have full human rights and civil liberties. I entreat those members of the community who think this a good idea to withdraw their advocacy.

A military parade past the evil dictator overlaid with a glitchy display of the logo of an evil corporation named after an evil soul-stealing magical artefact is the sort of writing I’d expect from a cheap 80s cartoon.

I would be downplaying the “this is the same dumb shit” angle myself, if I was into this stuff

Scratch a Terf and a fascist bleeds!

This plays like a bit out of a Starship Troopers sequel

GRCs have been forced onto the trans community and i don’t think we should be asking for it and rights to be dependent on it Self id is the way

Most of the news is horrifying and this story from Bourton-on-the-Water is no exception. Brace yourselves: a family of eight arrived for a picnic to find that… other people were also having picnics 😱 www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/whats-on/wha...

Among my concerns re: Casey recommending another inquiry into grooming gangs is a) we haven’t implemented the findings of the last one yet and b) UK state loves inquiries, and is consistently bad at implementing them in a meaningful way. See below:

2015: we went to the midwestern diner to interview the salt of the earth... (3 paragraphs later) ...who is the chair of the Oregon GOP. 2025: Yeah we straight up asked Republican strategists for sound bites, what are you going to do about it

Two phrases that need to be retired: “We are better than this.” (We’re not.) The U.S. president is “the leader of the free world.” (He’s not.)

Here in the Sullen South I met a lot of vets, young un's, and "This is my first protest, I didn't know what to expect" was said a lot.

Looking across the papers today, anti-trans rights commentators and politicians also seem to be the ones opposing making abortion legal. It shouldn’t be a shock to anyone - they’re against bodily autonomy. For everyone.

We are going to bullshit ourselves into pogroms and fascism because our governments are terrified of our utterly poisonous media outlets, who can bounce them into doing more or less anything just by threatening to start shenanigans on them and to never let up.

During the Years of Lead, after political assassination/bombings the police would round up all the left wing radicals, announcing that they had done so. In the Years of Lead Paint, a photo of a "flyer" no one would ever use or make is released to allow right wing media sphere to spin conspiracies
