Every so often, political media will go out of its way to create a story and then externalize it as though it happened naturally at the hands of some other party. "Continued questions" from whom? "Emerging" from where? This is police shooting-speak.

Canceling research on misinformation is not only an attack on science and academic freedom. It is also a democracy, safety, and security threat. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/15/b...

Somewhat oddly, the Trump regime's initial moves to cut science funding went very broad. This is catalyzing solidarity & advocacy around the value of science (see comms featuring cancer cures & tech innovation). But their next move may be to try to drive a wedge b/w "good science" & "bad science".

This is what a “bespoke” LLM looks like when it’s been custom-built to give way too much weight to the King’s courtroom fantasies.

Anchoring Effect in full force.

It's 2015. President Barack Obama has accepted a "sky palace" jumbo jet from the Qatari government, which he'll own after he leaves office. "Everybody relax," he says in an interview with the New York Times. Everyone does. The networks then televise the military parade in his honor on his birthday.

Trump's "big" trade deal is with the UK: - It's a framework not a deal - They're our 11th largest trading partner - They're only 3% of US trade (97% to go) - They *already* charge average tariffs of only 1% (limited upside) It's a photo op, not a macroeconomically significant moment.

If Trump was not President right now, he would 100% be saying that India and Pakistan would not be fighting if he was President right now.

"Empowering people to spot manipulation—irrespective of the issue—is the opposite of censorship." @profsanderlinden.bsky.social smashes the nail right on the head in Time Magazine, setting out the facts about misinformation research. #SciComm

As far as I can tell, the rationale for Trump's deranged new tariffs on movies is that he has learned that folks in other countries compete for business, and he doesn't like it. Wait until he hears about... every single other sector in the economy.

Once again, Australian election results prove how awful choropleth maps are for data visualisation. "Land doesn't vote, people do." #rstats code to reproduce animation here: github.com/emitanaka/oz...

Congratulations to @albomp.bsky.social and his party on their victory in the Australian federal election. Europeans and Australians are not just friends – we’re mates.

Sadly, I fear Tim Wilson has placed his last ANZAC day wreath. #Auspol

Canada: it was a close fight, but even the conservative leader lost his seat Australia: hold my beer

Dear Donald Trump; please thank Chris La Civita for his advice to the conservative Liberal Party, because Australians have just repudiated Trumpism, re-elected the Labor government and repudiated your evil right-wing bullshit. ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR! 🇦🇺 🇦🇺 🇦🇺 #auspol

Australia has compulsory voting; I made this video to explain why: it’s not about forcing us to vote, it’s about forcing governments to ensure a ballot reaches EVERY CITIZEN’S HAND, & we owe it to conservative, rural Tasmanian Senator Herbert Payne in 1924 for making that argument. #auspol

Decided not to vote for the guy whose wife assures us he's not a monster. #Auspol

It’s Election Day, Canada. Go vote Canada Strong.

The Coalition's nuclear plan website quotes an article by ex-chief scientist and nuclear advocate Dr Alan Finkel. What they left out is that same article also explains why the Coalition's coal-to-nuclear plan is untenable. "Nothing I can do about it," Finkel told me. www.crikey.com.au/20...
