We also want to continue working on things that connect the mushroom body AND central complex as we proposed here: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.... . This project started for me with a Walter-Benjamin Fellowship by the @dfg.de

While there is loads of conservation, there are also some key differences, in regions that were predicted to be particularly prone to change, and also in ways that might make sense computationally for spatial foragers – so that’s cool!

We take a close look at the Heliconiini central complex, how it evolves as a system very differently from the mushroom bodies, and how it might differ between spatially foraging Heliconius and closely related outgroups, through phylogenetic comparative methods and detailed anatomical analysis.

This was... a loooong process and @ebablab.bsky.social needed to show some incredible patience. But it’s finally out! With Basil el Jundi, Yi-Peng Toh, Elizabeth Hodge and Theodora Loupasaki.
