I’m not sure about the timeline — reports had them leaving last night from Whiteman, it’s 7000 miles from there to Iran, and even fully loaded B-2s refueling midair and avoiding certain airspaces would be able to make it by the time the strikes happened (~20 hours later).

I think we can expect a variety of levels of potential engagement, from very occasional to voraciously frequent. Totally agree that we can’t expect everyone to be doing this in their abundant (ha) free time. School is a great place to get the fundamentals started!

Lots of people are either communicating their work or other people’s work to people who aren’t active in science but aren’t opposed to it, and that’s definitely science communication.

The original post isn’t about either of those use cases. I agree that researchers should be able to communicate their work to a variety of audiences but I don’t agree that only converting anti-science folks are science communicators.

The sheriff is a cruel & capricious authoritarian; the national guard is called in to control the situation, and while they have the firepower, they're made up of guys who are worried about having to be back at work on Monday; the main character is treated as expendable by the government he's served
