He didn't anticipate the SNP vote staying at home, he overestimated the Reform support, and crucially underestimated the Labour support.

I find it hard to believe that there are many Labour/Lib Dem/SNP/Green voters who are actually troubled by the small boats. We no doubt would prefer safe routes, but we're certainly not having meltdowns over the people who arrive here safely. It is also worth noting that we're the majority.

If we can get this Youth Mobility Scheme in place, brexit will collapse. I believe retirees will then demand a similar scheme, which will change the narrative and thinking around freedom of movement. At this point, a return to the EU will have little opposition.
