It took eight years of determined fighting by her mum but today a coroner rules that benefit cuts error led to Jodey Whiting’s death bit.ly/3HB6x2t she was deemed fit to work by @DWPgovuk having missed an assessment because she was in hospital with pneumonia.

Jodey Whiting - a 42 year old disabled mum - died in 2017, leaving a note saying she had no money for food. Now, a new inquest has ruled Jodey killed herself after her benefits were “mistakenly stopped by the DWP.” Thoughts to Jodey’s mum who fought for justice. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

It isn't possible to design a school system where everyone leaves with the skills needed for the workplace because *they're all going to do different jobs*. Workplace training needs to be done by employers.

Superb article here on devolution in the UK Supreme Court, calling for an interpretive approach which recognises the accommodation of national pluralism as devolution’s central purpose: academic.oup.com/ojls/advance...

The majority of parents in poverty who remain out-of-work face significant barriers to work. This includes having a child under 5, having a disabled adult or child in the family or having three or more children.

We live in a world with newspapers struggling for a variety of reasons - so here’s a 300 year old story of survival. Just forgive the fact that after the storming of the Bastille in 1789, the paper suggested there wasn’t much news from Paris:

Without ambitious policy change, child poverty is projected to increase dramatically over the next decade. In fact, should the Government continue with existing policy, our projections suggest child poverty will hit 33 per cent in 2029-30, a level not seen since 1998-99.

shoutout to one of my criminal law students for attempting to use the "defence of inanity" which I think should definitely be a general defence.

Today is National Biscuit Day, and it’s about time that I populated this account with biscuit (cookie) sets from the past few years. Here are some of my favourites. 🧵 First up, a set inspired by the delicious designs of William Morris and John Henry Dearle.

Seeing as Emil Bove personally fired me from DOJ in retaliation for prosecuting January 6 rioters, I don’t think he should be confirmed to a lifetime seat as a federal judge. But that’s just me.

Great summary of the case for Total Place. As the article says, there's a wide coaltion of organisations who support this. This was @instituteforgovernment.org.uk's contribution from earlier this month: www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/publication/...

Now is the time to make child poverty strategy as ambitious as possible. All children should have a chance at childhood, and the opportunity to build the future they want. Send a message to the Chancellor today demanding investment in young people: everychild.childrenssociety.postbug.app

Labour government policies have led to losses of more than £1bn from the HE sector since it came to power in July, new analysis suggests. It comes as @politicshome.bsky.social understands there is concern in the sector over the direction of HE reforms www.politicshome.com/news/article...

This is on to something where it talks about people opposing removing the two child limit in “superficial polls” As @luketryl.bsky.social sets out here- there’s a difference between 3 second, 30 second & 3 minute reactions, and narratives really matter. bsky.app/profile/luke...

Valuable @courtwatchldn.bsky.social reporting highlighting that delays to trials mean people are being tried as adults, despite having been children when they committed the crime.

feels ironic that all the focus is on "social media is destroying literacy and civic engagement" when we seem to be doing a great job at that in our institutions as well

Good take down from @profserious.bsky.social of the fashionable idea that we should replace university research with institutes. We need different models for different disciplines, and the pipeline of talent needs universities open.substack.com/pub/profseri...

'UK universities are an incredibly cheap place to fund research. The exact cost recovery varies but overall universities only secure about 60% of the cost of research (excluding unfunded scholarship) from grants. The shortfall is paid by fees from teaching international students' 1/2

Interesting research. If there's one thing that GLPs should have taught it, it's that hormones are incredibly powerful in ways that it's hard for us (the occupiers of individual bodies with only one experience of them) to appreciate. www.newstatesman.com/politics/hea...

Worth noting that literally every other leader is preferred to Nigel Farage as PM. This could become quite important if/when a general election approaches with polling suggesting Farage has a real shot at being PM
