Also, how independent is the Mouth? Is he more or less free to act on his own than the Naxgul?
If less, then this is all Sauron's play - who has the ring?
Or if more, is this his own scheme to impress the big boss and get an Orthanc shaped reward - who is this spy?

The children of Mithrellas don't seem particularly long lived. Galador made it to 125 which is short for a Numenorian never mind a half-elf. Perhaps they were a great disappointment to her.

The Elfyness of Imrahil has always puzzled me, Legolas confirms it is true when they meet.
Such a fuss is made of the two unions of elves and men that the gods get involved and make the offspring choose between a mortal life and immortality.
Does it not matter because it was wood elves?

I thought this was part of the power of the stone of Erech, brought from Numenor by Isildur.

I think this is the closest we get to Tolkien explaining his magic system - it is tied up with legal authority. Aragorn is the true owner of the Palantir so he gets advantage on his contested control check and wins. Saruman had no right to the Orthanc stone so he loses the battle for control.

I'm not fond of the way T's later additions tend to diminish the tragedies of Saruman, Borromir & Denethor. D being jealous of young Aragorn etc.

Yes, lying doesn't seem true to the character, but stealing a quest to gain glory does.. I like that we're left not knowing, I'm not even sure if JRRT wanted us to be suspicious but if not, I think he over-eggs the whole 'this was meant to be Faramir's quest' plot.

I've always thought it fishy that Borromir had the dream... after his brother had it twice and described it.
We only have the word of Borromir that he did indeed have the dream.

What really rankles for me is that movie Theoden is right in nearly every argument he has with Gandalf and Aragorn. Ride out and meet that army! Not with the handful of men the movie gives him.

I've always fancied that as followers of Oromë, they rode great steads, the descendants of which became the Mearas.

Glorfindel, Balrog, I've heard that song somewhere before.
Gandalf doesn't always seem to know why something has to be done, and done in a certain way, but his wisdom does seem to be in picking the unlikely path that happens to be the right one.

This is a bit of a stretch, but it's totally in keeping with Gandalf making hail Mary passes all over the pitch.

I think the reason I favour this reading is that Gandalf always seemed rather eager to go to Moria, even before the attempt on the Redhorn. He senses an urgent threat that must be dealt with now, not some slumbering malice they can counter at their leisure later.

Yes, but I would venture this; that the presence of Orcs from Mordor in Moria tells us that Sauron was aware of the Balrog when the Wise were not and that Sauron would have plans. .. the assault on Lorien could then have been two pronged.

I've always wondered about that. The Moria chapter mentions Orcs from Mordor and I've read many people assuming the Balrog would lead the assault on Lorien. Maybe not a servant, but certainly an ally.

Burin's Bane! How did that happen?

In terms of espionage, it's like the head of SOE bumping into a long hidden valuable sleeper agent and they kill each other.

I think an important part of why it works is that Durin's Bane has been teased a few times by this point, a mysterious killer that can't be the witch king or some other foe we've encountered. Legolas recognises a Balrog, then Gimli links it to Burin's Bane.

Also Aragon and the Palantir - which reinforces your point that a Numenorian lord getting hold of the ring is his big concern.

I've been thinking about this for a while but hadn't come across those terms. I'd been thinking modern morality was splitting between 'consent' and 'authority'. I think notion of horizontal morality may be better.
comment in response to

I saw someone describe it the other day as "vertical morality" vs "horizontal morality" - the latter's based on empathy & consideration of the harm certain decisions may do to others. The former is governed by the moral authority granted to a person or entity - a higher power - to act as they do.

Twitter just isn't as good, this place has achieved critical mass, and it's now much easier to find good content here than there. Because of this it won't be long before twitter is irrelevant. It's not ceding ground, it's staying relevant.
