IMO Mathematica has pretty defaults and are probably more painful to customize, while ggplot has less nice defaults but are easier to modify. It's possible to add some interactivity to plain ggplots with R Shiny, but at that point I'd go with Shiny + ggplot + plotly for it's ggplotly function.
