Why reading books is essential.

This is what I always tell students in my political geography / border courses: the systems we have are the result of choices we've made, and we can (and will have to) make different ones moving forward.

After I published this story last week, I heard from readers, tech policy experts, even tech workers who were angry the tech industry was pushing this bill, and many sent thanks for reporting the story. I also *lost* paying subscribers, who, I surmise, prefer to think of AI as apolitical.
