Didn’t Rio Tinto buy Alcan - not Alcoa. Alcoa has joint ventures with RT in Quebec, but is separate from Alcan.

This is the first thing I’ve read of yours that I haven’t agreed with. I don’t know Smith’s other work, but his core points here seem to me to be a very valid warning. Dismissing Musk’s possible capabilities, even if overstated, would be a mistake.

Trump is clearly trying to bait his opponents to create a sense of conflict and emergency - which in turn is used to justify emergency actions to deal with the conflict he creates. This is about forcing his ‘side’ to align with him. He is consciously destroying the centre.

Privatisation has visibly failed, and this truth is accepted by most people across the political spectrum. This is the best chance for a generation to nationalise something that matters. Do this right and the whole debate moves in favour of public ownership.
