Progression is a little grindy, imo, but once that opens up, combat becomes a lot more interesting

Once you hit level 6 (irc), you unlock the ability to upgrade all weapons and earn modifiers that change the ways the act in combat. That makes every weapon feel dramatically better because you have more control to tune your play style
