I missed my chance at a career, so here I am. Was once published in Moldova. I read & write about terrorism (mostly women in) for fun. But also a mum. Beside the seaside. 🇺🇸🇳🇿

Of course, the big difference between Los Angeles right now and all of those studies is that those studies were about how to prevent violence. The Trump administration seems to be craving it.

/4 5. Any time you criticize reaction B to event A, it’s reasonable for people to ask if you are ignoring, minimizing, or apologizing for event A. That doesn’t mean they’re right. But it’s a fair question.

/3 4. People have been debating the right way to defy power for as long as there has been debate or power. A robust ongoing debate about what kind of protest is effective, “good politics,” or morally good is an unqualified good thing. Free people should debate stuff like that.

/2 2. The media and political norm is to emphasize the few bad actors because that draws attention.
3. Sometimes the narrative is especially and overtly dishonest and even openly bigoted, like now. Exercise critical thinking.

The people who have been victims, or who have dealt with the victims, understand this.

In short: don’t let the absence of the words “Insurrection Act” fool you. Trump has authorized the deployment of troops anywhere in the country where protests against ICE activity might occur. That is a huge red flag for democracy in the United States. 19/19

But there’s an even bigger problem with Trump’s order. He isn’t just authorizing deployment to Los Angeles. In fact, his memorandum doesn’t even mention LA. It authorizes deployment “at locations where protests against [ICE] functions are occurring or are likely to occur.” 13/19

In situations where law enforcement authorities are working to maintain order, they are best positioned to know whether they need reinforcements. LA police are very much on the scene. And they are not asking for help. 12/19 www.reuters.com/world/us/rio...

But it would be a mistake to focus too much on which statutory power is being used here. What matters it that Trump is federalizing the Guard for the purpose of policing Americans’ protest activity. That’s dangerous for both public safety and democracy. 8/19

That’s alarming enough. But Trump has also authorized deployment of troops anywhere in the country where protests against ICE are occurring or are likely to occur, even if they are entirely peaceful. That is unprecedented and a clear abuse of the law. 2/19
