Writing about civics and government; making things; dad & husband. Working with my brother on a documentary about American teachers. Yes, I did write all those Crashcourse history videos for John Green.

It will be a new dance craze by the end of the day.

How often have we been confronted with this sort of logic: "if you don't agree with me and do what I want, then you don't know what you're doing,"? (I'm as guilty of it as the next person, but I'm not the President)

It's an admission as much as an admonishment. I'm far from immune from the drive to be a perpetual teenager. Let's grab a drink and discuss how we can be less dickish together.

This is the most accurate description of DJT I have ever heard. He may want to be the King of America, but he's already the King of Projection.

And, honestly Will, you are smart and I do appreciate your passion for leftist politics. I wish that America didn't fetishize an adolescent masculine mentality that I've unfairly made you an avatar of. I apologize for that.

It's not the politics, its the style. By them I don't mean Will or his politics specifically, I mean boy-men who feel entitled to say and do whatever they want and not only not face consequences, but reap rewards. We turn obnoxious white men into heroes and give them power.

and thus I was unable to teach you that there are ways to bring about change in systems that disappoint you without being a dick about it.

No. Dean Wormer wanted to punish the Deltas. I think that I was too indulgent (as too many people were to me). You and I are the result of people believing that being smart is more important than being kind. I'd say that we are both insufferable for our overgrown teenage solipsism. I never learned

Ain't gonna stop the pundits from doing just that, though.

The GOP is officially the pro-human-trafficking party.

I'd say that the bright side is that sooner rather than later they will be dead.

This isn't deportation. It's human trafficking.

Basically we've turned the country over to Otter from Animal House.

He was on the cutting edge of a certain class of privileged white teens who teachers and parents chose to indulge. We (and I'm as guilty as anyone) smiled at their cleverness when we should have told them to shut the fuck up with their bullshit.

He hasn't changed since I taught him over 20 years ago. A 41- year-old insufferable teenager.

That's always been the way he's run his businesses, so why change now?

But how do you feel about "ahistorical" as an adjective, as in "his argument rests on an ahistorical assertion of ..."?

I love a good baseball cap, but can we agree that the President of the U.S. should not be wearing one all the time, indoors and out, and especially not with a suit and tie?

Only a lawyer could think it was. Anyone with an ounce of historical understanding knows exactly what the War Powers Act was about. It sure isn't a 60 day blank check.

New York's population is 3X LA's and more than 10X DC's. And when Marion Barry was DC's mayor we heard about it a lot.

We also had smart vice presidents, with the 4 year exception of Mike Pence. (And it does pain me to admit that Cheney was smart, in an evil sort of way).

I contend that if you were to explain it to them, most New Yorkers would consider themselves New Deal Liberals and their ideal mayoral candidate's policies would look like LaGuardia's. The "leftists" and the DINOs don't represent the majority of people who live here.

Learning is supposed to get more challenging as you go along. Colleges don't seem to want to develop learners as much as received them fully-formed. I'm always distressed when former students tell me that HS was so much harder than college.

I think it's mostly to do with who is making TV these days. Most writers are generations removed from working class relatives, many have little experience with unionized workers (except for public sector unions). I'd like to see a 24-style show set in a Bodega or a 7-11.

I see the same thing in popular novels, too. All work is white collar office work.

I loved your take on this issue. Remember the sitcoms of the '70s? Obviously All in the Family, but Chico and the Man, Sanford and Son, Good Times, even Laverne and Shirley centered on the lives of working people, if not their actual work.
