By-elections are difficult to figure; it’s a crap shoot but it would be a huge narrative builder if the UCP won it — especially if it was only low turnout that made it happen. Hugely demoralizing to the NDP for the next 16 months.

I think just in Ellerslie and Olds — I don’t think they ran a candidate in Strathcona

We have three by-elections on Monday too — that seat in Ellerslie is one to watch, especially since the UCP picked up former PC MLA Bhardwaj

Addictions as the reason for homelessness = 14.4%.
This is down from the 39.3% I identified in the same 2011 local census.
We are doing something right in this regard despite the naysayers.
Time to identify and exploit those processes. 6/9

The top reasons for being homeless:
Rent’s too high = 22.2%
No Income assistance = 20.3%
Low income = 19.6%.
Financial issues combined make up 62.1% of the reasons for being homeless.
It reflects the 60% I captured in a 2011 census, showing little change in this regard. 5/9

There are some troubling trends.
>15% of our homeless population is made up of youth.
~5% are seniors.
Ave age = 27.4 (=young)
Note: Experience in foster care/youth group home is a prominent social determinant of homelessness in this document (i.e., we're grooming youth for homelessness). 3/9

The number of enumerated homeless people has grown by 15% since 2022. That amounts to 522.
As PIT counts typically capture 25% to 50% of the actual homeless population, I'd suggest the number is closer to 650. 2/9

Excellent use of the Klingon proverb re revenge.....
In all seriousness, I would suggest everyone read this superb editorial. It's hard hitting and more importantly 100 percent true and keenly expressed

I read somewhere today that the projected cost of the COVID shots is in the range of less than C$50/shot.

Omg — I forget this show exists every week. I have to think it’s a defence mechanism forcing me to take a break because I should not forget every single week after 4 years.

UCP is alienating their conservative strong holds. That say something about UCP. Conservatives are different from Alt-right and grifters, which seems to be what UCP is really about. UCP: the Unconservatine Party of Alberta.

I don’t think progressives are immune from it but it does seem to be more of an issue with conservative voters. Skewed vision from Alberta, admittedly.

Conservatives vote conservative.

Yes — if there isn’t a conservative option on the ballot they will more than likely hold their nose and vote UCP.

To get the NDP out of course. Just like conservatives split into reform and PCs and then back together to get the liberals out, and then the PPC popped out, and Poilievre had to get them back… it’s just the cycle they go through.

Conservatives aren’t a monolith; it’s why they prefer separate parties.

They’re happier (at least according to polling) with the idea of Smith than Nenshi (Abacus came out with similar numbers to Janet Brown; 52-28 support). It’s hugely difficult for the NDs to overcome but they have more of a shot if they acknowledge the problem imo

On brand for her. After Doug Schweitzer resigned (Aug 30, 2022) and she refused to run in Calgary-Elbow, it sat vacant until the 2023 election.
