Hasn’t so far, fortunately! They are a bright spot online for sure.

Horrifying indeed… that said, people need to pay attention, both on the beach and to @cpsc.gov for their notifications about beach umbrella safety!
Took a hot minute to find as they haven’t posted any of their graphics for that recently, but:

Oh, definitely a good place to start, though I think Swordheart works well, too. I just wanted to comment with more titles because you didn’t mention there were more! ;)

Oh, she has written rather more Paladin books than just Clockwork Boys and The Wonder Engine (which is really where the horny pops). Swordheart was just re-released, which is not a Paladin book but is similar; Paladin’s xxx (Grace, Strength, Hope, Faith) are the Saint of Steel series, more to come.

I found Shep and Ursula via K.B. Spangler. Came in via K.B.’s house blog (Flying by Night, sadly not updated recently) when I was looking up something for a home renovation project and Google popped up one of her pages. Her house issues are so very much worse than anything I’ve had to deal with….

I was in the US Capitol yesterday and saw the heavily-garlanded King Kamehameha I statue there… didn’t catch on that it was a special day for it, alas! And we missed any ceremony around it. Hope you had a good holiday!

Lord help me, I clicked through… they are saying that AI is ‘already outperforming human workers.’ How? Where? By what metrics? Getting people to never want to interact with the AI again?

Would be SO NICE to have ranked choice voting, yeah.

Yeah, I don’t really mean being active about pushing them, just keep the books available and try to mix some in every so often. I very much let them read what they want, though.

I like Wyrd Sisters rather more than Equal Rites as a starting point… my friend who introduced me started me off on Guards, Guards though. (And yes, I e seen the various book charts now. :)

My kids would also like to advocate for water slides to enhance the descent.
…heck, I’d do that too. :)
Though that does kinda miss the ADA part. Distracted by the fountains, and where’s that water going, anyway?

My sister’s son bounced off Dragonflight, yeah, and my two have had similar reactions to older books. That said, any advice on getting one’s kids to read Discworld is appreciated. I’m more or less just at, “they are there whenever you want to try them,” but so far… sigh.

It’s elsewhere in one of Courtney’s threads, but the issue with this is that bankruptcy law is designed to disrupt contracts. Even if you have a clause like you state, a bankruptcy court can override that - even if it already nominally took effect! - to recover value for the company’s shareholders.

Vacancy for a set time period to remove a rental from rent control, perhaps? I’m not up on rent control laws currently, but when I used to rent (talking over 20 years ago) this was a thing sometimes. Usually it went along with ‘improvements’ to the rental, though, not just leaving it empty.

I believe it was from an interview with Kris Kolluri I was listening to, but haven’t found it in a quick search, sorry. Basically I think the move would be to cancel everything instead of having a hugely uncertain and variable amount of service.

I heard that a strike is allowed but the engineers don’t want to go on strike - so long as progress is being made in negotiations, they should continue working. However, if a subset of the engineers decide to ‘soft strike’ (e.g. mass sick leave), NJ Transit management would lock out everyone.

…well. TIL about the number of teats on a female goat, I always thought they had four like a cow. Based on what I remember from biology classes (looong ago), usually mammals would have more teats than the typical number of babies. Wonder why that’s different for goats!

Wasn’t it applesauce that had lead in it, fairly recently? Though that was in varieties with cinnamon, not all applesauce. Still, yet another thing to be cautious about as various guardrails are taken away.

From southern NJ to/from Newark Airport, definitely less (talking $100 or more) to take Uber + NJT via Hamilton station, compared to Uber all the way. Do need to watch the timing, though, but with a little luck it doesn’t run all that much longer.

My new phone fell out of my pocket to the concrete sidewalk as I bent over to pick up the package containing the new case….
Fortunately I did have a screen protector for the phone, but there is some chipping on the corner, covered by said case. Sigh.

As much as I enjoyed Suikoden and its music, FF6 has been playing in my head ever since I read your skeet. At least I can change up which track every so often. And it is also good music. :)

Having aunts and uncles who have bandwidth to spare for their nieces and nephews can be a tremendous thing for those nieces and nephews! (I was one of those nephews who benefited.)

If they will always heal, and are more benevolent, perhaps they are working with beryllium or similar toxic substances that would cause trouble for normal humans?
