Like, you wouldn't believe. Sometimes I tell younger coworkers tales from my salad days and they're like "no, no way that's not made up" ... and this one probably beats them all.

I already have an idea. Maude succeeds in conceiving a child. It's a couple years down the road. Someone kidnaps Maude's kid and the Dude has to find... THE LITTLE LEBOWSKI

The foundation of it, yes of course. It's learning the language so that you can study philosophy. I meant you don't read philosophers or study schools of thought.

In a roughly 80 minute exposure, I was unable to get the segment of the nebula to the horse's "right" side to come through. I'd hoped to get about 5 hours of photons last night, but a clear night turned to heavy cloud cover around 9:30 pm. Grumble grumble snarl.

I used to do the Super Troopers "meow" gag to every single customer at the drive thru when I worked in fast food. Pull around meow.

If we're gonna insist on building torment nexuses, can we at least go whole hog and get a Transmetropolitan-style hell future with anti-cancer pills, talking dogs, and foglets?

An app for hired goons is, at least, more SNOW CRASH than BLADE RUNNER. For what that's worth.

Also, again, Duarte played Marco because he was also carrying out a strategy and his plan allowed for Marco to win or lose because it didn't matter, when Duarte comes back he's taking it all. Hilarious, then, that Duarte's utopia was so heavily modeled on Sparta. (Stopped numbering, but this ends)

It has more in common with Paul threatening to destroy the spice than with him unleashing the Fremen jihad. And Paul's threat and it's result of him claiming Irulan and the throne are not Fremen moves.

It isn't smashing for the sake of smashing, or plunder. It isn't Muad'Dib's jihad. It's one combatant effectively removed- even if only temporarily - from the war.

It appears brutal, senseless, mere terrorism. It's attempted murder of planetary scale. It's shocking. And it forces Earth to spend all its energy on defense, effectively removing them from the real conflict. It's an immediate victory and that was Marco's purpose.

Marco makes an alliance of convenience with Duarte (and arguably gets played BADLY there, effectively proving the falsehood of the Fremen trope by having the civilized military man playing the longer game and ultimately winning) More importantly, Marco drops the rocks.

And the necessities of the Belter existence provide numerous examples of the harsh conditions and tolerance of casualties and so on. BUT. Marco is not the pure, savage guerilla who strikes and strikes and strikes because there is nothing else. He has strategy, and more: he has a winning strategy.

The oppressed Belters call the most inhospitable place in existence home. Their water and air literally belong to someone else. You will be hard pressed to find a purer example of the Fremen/Sardaukar/Aiel trope. And Marco's war against the Inners is stunning in its brutality. 3/?

I love this essay for its historical analysis AND it's author's clear familiarity and enjoyment of Dune. It has me thinking about Fremen, and about Aiel, and about Marco Inaros and how the Belters almost fit the trope but Marco Inaros manages to both subvert while exemplifying. 2/?

Copyright is not just "you have to pay me to use the fruits of my labor" it is also "I get to say no if I don't want you to". If you think it's funny when RATM tells pepublicans to stop using their music, then you should support lifelong copyright on creative works.
