An outdoorsy photoshoppy mole- likes National Trust scones & Dartmoor. A bookish mole in a hole seeking the return of integrity. Not sure this adds much to it though. #AltText

a friend of mine shared this ai-generated "emotion wheel" and unfortunately i have been laughing my ass off at it for like 15 minutes now. today i am feeling Fnliinneon

This literally goes back to the French Revolution. The Right insisted that all unrest was fomented by elite actors, and were still insisting that was the truth, right through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was still a dominant narrative when George Rudé wrote to counter it in the 1950s.

The world has changed so much yet hasn’t changed at all. When I was a kid, Saddam’s military parades and extravagant birthday celebrations were part of our imposed ‘culture’.

William Randolph Hearst, not Orwell. (The sentiment is there, but we do need to check our sources first).

#Archaeology #History #MedievalHistory #England #Wales #Cymru The other day, someone asked me what happened to all the monks and nuns after the Dissolution. How do I know? I'm a Roman historian! So I looked it up and found this excellent article: www.english-heritage.org.uk/learn/histor...

After “rule of law”, “separation of powers”, “habeas corpus”, our next legal term for those following the ongoing US constitutional crisis is “insurrection”. This is like the most dismal 101 course in constitutional law (and lack of law) ever, played before us in real time.

Spot-on. The US government has long been itching to use the Insurrection Act. Miller’s words are carefully chosen. Not good.

Ofc he does

🔴How the Media is Trying to Talk a Nigel Farage Government Into Reality Why for much of the British press, the unlikely story of Reform UK's rise to power is simply "too good to check" www.adambienkov.co.uk/p/how-the-me...

💥 BREAKING: Ukrainian drones flew out of grain train car hatches and destroyed 13 Russian tanks and more than a 100 armored vehicles and other equipment being transported by the Russian train in occupied southern Ukraine. The hatches appear to have been opened by remote control, again.

Waking up in Rome… off to cycle the Appuan Way today!

Bluesky upload speeds gotta improve: we desperately need this platform to be a good place for this kind of on-the-ground coverage work.

NEW: Unbelievable. A seemingly endless line of tanks & other military vehicles arrive in DC ahead of next week's parade. They departed Texas 5 days ago. What a colossal waste of time, money & military resources. All for a President who has shown zero respect for service personnel. (🎥 DW)

Gen AI lyke a stealthye vampyre doth hyde the corpses (texts) that it hath drained. Yn contrast, even the rankest act of publisshinge piracye at least doth move a booke ynto the handes of a reader. But Gen AI doth nevir cite sources or reveal the workes it hath plunderid. A solipsism moost vile.

Oooh, you mean it's OK to leave, realise it's a mistake, then rejoin? 😉

Moments ago, on the garden fence, to my definite surprise! — a male kestrel (with a juvenile rat kill). I had not recorded a kestrel in my suburban garden until now. Delighted with his brief visit — & my close, naked-eye view of this gorgeous small falcon, much-loved by me since childhood.

Looking south across moody Derwent Water a week ago, with mist from early rain lifting. It was just warm enough for a swim 🌊 'Derwen' also the Cymraeg/Welsh word for oak, showing the deep antiquity of the name #TheLakes #Cumbria 📷 My own

For the second time today, russians bombed Kharkiv, now with glide bombs. A 30yo woman died, and 16 people were wounded. One strike landed near the children's railway, the second bomb hit a private household in the central district. Outrageous.

You may not like it but this is what 2 high agency males look like...

As someone who has now taught students in some capacity, I cannot stress enough how much person-to-person teaching cannot be replaced.

The @prehistoricsociety.bsky.social Europa Conference has begun! It’s lovely to see so many folks at the University of Reading to honour Prof Martin Bell and I’m so pumped for the lineup of talks 🤩

Turn it off. Stop using it. Turn it off. Stop. Stop. Stop. If every time I was wrong about something, a gallon of precious water was boiled into the sky, my neighbourhood got polluted and someone lost their job, people would stop asking me things.

Words To Live By Number 218

Hi All, just sent out my free weekend update. The events of the last week show the profound war fighting differences between Ukraine and Russia. One is trying to fight humanely and intelligently, the other is attacking civilians to cause terror. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz: "May I remind you that we are having June 6 tomorrow. This is the D-Day anniversary." #Taco Trump: "Not a pleasant day for you. That was not a great day." German Chancellor:  "This was the liberation of my country from Nazi dictatorship."

Impossible to overstate how horrific this photograph is to the Wiggles the Caterpillar community

Did ICE deliberately set out to recruit truly vile amoral people or are we seeing Nazi guard syndrome here? Where ordinary people turn rotten given a set of circumstances that encourage it. What do they think when they get home at night?

Thinking of a hero I knew and admired.
