Your setup made me giggle, too! Having a community of teachers who build each other up is so important. I’m humbled to be grouped together with y’all! 🙏🏻

Reading Brett's book was the first time I could actually picture what AI could look like in a classroom in a way that prioritizes learning and critical thinking—including with student writing!
Which is why I valued this conversation so much:

Hopefully, the more teachers amplify students’ voices, the we will be protected from losing these meaningful practices. #EduSky

So many things would be better if we modeled Kindergarten!

I do love to allow myself to get carried away with what could be new! (the imaginings list is much longer right now)
But I also try to nail down what already worked + what I want to lean into even more, such as our culture of revision in the classroom:

I’m a NCLB teacher. I was trained to follow curriculum guides. All of my formative PD was provided by textbook companies and curriculum vendors. I’ve had to work independently to seek out pedagogical training that helps me be a better classroom teacher. #TeacherSky

Standardized, boxed curricula do not allow for multiple ways of direct instruction. So many NCLB teachers were trained with standardized curricula and told to just follow the scope and sequences and the script and students should learn the content. Teachers need training in direct instruction.

💯 The challenge of teaching in the modern era with all the attacks on public education is committing to what we actually value. Where I stand is that 15-20 years from now, nobody will care about a kid’s elem test scores; people will care about their character & ability to exist in community.

For sure! There are so many things outside of my control. Layer that on top of poorly designed tests that provide inaccurate results, and it makes sense that the only way to score well is to train your students to score well. I’m not looking to do that, ever.

Thanks! I work to detach myself from standardized test scores, not connecting my abilities as a teacher to the outcome of the tests. If there is an inverse correlation between compassion and high scores, I’ll always choose to be compassionate.
