Thank you! I feel like “taking long walks” and “eating lots of cheese” are two strategies I can and will implement 😆

I do think “having the perfect wife” will be my secret weapon too! And I will absolutely be putting the ice cream tip into practice, haha.

I don’t! The closest I come to something like that is probably DIY house stuff, which does demand a certain kind of tactile creativity… but my life has just been staring at a laptop screen for so long! Definitely need to find something like that; feels like great advice.

I'm worried all my intellectual muscles have totally crumbled to dust (have had absolutely no luck writing fiction post-dissertation, uh-oh) but I guess I'll find out!

@sylvie-althoff.bsky.social I am SO sorry for this late response, I lost this in my notifications, but just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed this! Absolutely pitch-perfect voice, and so many brilliant little details. Thanks for sharing! Glad to have not missed this one.

…this is a good reminder that I should be working on finishing an R&R for an article about swords and dildos and queer women in Shakespearean romance instead of posting on Bluesky all day 😅

It's not quite my wheelhouse, though it's near enough that I may return with more reading recs as they come to me! I work on early modern lit, often with a focus on women's queer desires, which is why my suggestions skew historical (I do often find myself writing about queer women who want swords!).

This is a topic near and dear to my heart as both scholar and reader, so I am very excited in advance about this future essay! I was so new to SFF things last year, but I remember seeing that panel mentioned, and thinking, ohh, I've got to start going to cons! Would have loved to catch that one!

(Castle is probably the most relevant here in terms of theoretical approaches / attention to a self-conscious gaze, but the others may be useful or interesting from a more historical angle… the earliest “sword lesbians” / erotics of female masculinity!)

Apologies if I’m doing the insufferable thing of listing suggestions already given in the replies - I did scroll through, may have missed something! - but this question totally has my wheels spinning. Will report back if other ideas come to mind!

There’s a few chapters in Traub’s Renaissance of Lesbianism that discuss the erotics of female masculinity and the emergence of a “sapphic” figure. There might be something useful in Wahl’s Invisible Relations, too, though it’s not as fresh in my mind. And maybe Susan Lanser’s “Sapphic Picaresque”?
comment in response to post
Probably already on your radar, but Terry Castle’s Apparitional Lesbian talks about the difficulty of locating this queer female gaze (seeing the invisible/ghostly) and also discusses the construction of queer erotic fantasies on stage/screen, including representations of female masculinity.

Thank you, and thank you for making “doctor moctor” play in my head on loop all afternoon!

Thank you so much, friend! 🤍😊

Would love that! 😄 What’s the best way to connect off Bluesky? I could send you an email tomorrow when I’m back at the computer!

Thank you! There was a stretch there where making it to the other side did not seem guaranteed 😅

Thank you! (And happy belated book birthday!!! I have been a little underwater this week, I’m late on everything, but am so excited to read as soon as I can!)

HAHA it already feels so weird after four hours that I don’t think I can take it permanently 😅

Defeated the snake with the power of friendship! And the power of close reading.

I’m more in a “WHAT IF MY HOUSE COLLAPSES OVERNIGHT AND I MISS THE DEFENSE” headspace than an “I can do it” headspace but thank you!!!
comment in response to post
Aaahhh, congratulations! I cannot wait to read 🤍
comment in response to post
I like that framing! “Defense” does make me feel like I’m heading into a hand-to-hand combat scenario 😅 I do feel like it’ll go totally fine, and my committee is the best, and the defense itself will probably be fun… but alas, logic is not enough to outweigh the anxiety of waiting!
