No worries, I'm just always fascinated by culture collisions 😆. Recall graduate advisor commenting in all seriousness that a colloquium screaming matches (plural not a typo, really, multiple shout-downs) meant the material presented was truly interesting. One developed a very thick skin.

Well, that just screams additional dish 😝. Me first: That time a physicist in a biomedical working meeting was taken aside & diplomatically given a heads-up about kindler, gentler communication norms in the life sciences.

Have you dared ask for an essay in the style of diagrammonkey...?

Speaking of venues where you need to build a plan beforehand😱! Gotta get in shape for the NOLA CC 👟. Will be curious to hear how APS goes for you--have fun!

Sigh. Fighting to make this a place everyone can just come and look at the burrowing owls together. 😢

...leaving out words today, but you get the gist...😆

Maybe sessions on scicomm, plus plenary & a few sessions w/fun topics for zeitgeist. Animal behavior, climate & such for seeing physicists meshing w/the larger world. Above all, identify an escape spot first thing--coffee shop or corner--to get away when it's all too much. Not unlike AGU 😆.

Ah-ha! Something like that, circulate on the exhibit floor, identify other outreach folk who can one in? For users themselves, you can sort the program pretty w/a topic/related keywords search, current users, coauthors & relevant organizations...
comment in response to post
As for APS, waaay less emphasis than AGU on speaking to a general audience of other physicists let alone non-physicists or the public. Upside is it’s easy to cross off huge swathes of the program as incomprehensible to anyone outside a narrow specialty & focus on areas of interest.

Wow. Just...wow.

Fun! Business, personal, combination? Done lots of big scientific meetings across wide spectrum of disciplines for different reasons. I start w/a clear personal mission statement for the meeting. Next, I familiarize myself with the venue. Easier to tackle the program when I've got those in mind.

Deleted because, damn, not sure & don't like the options. But Sept 30 CR seems like the smallest 💩 sandwich in this picnic basket from hell. Maybe 6 months will give the Dems enough time to change the menu. *Sigh*.

Perhaps I'm not giving us enough credit? 🤔 Maybe if safe, ordinary spaces are trying to kill us, it's a message we should live dangerously in extraordinary ones 😜.

Ouch & sympathies. $1200 ER visit two weeks ago tripping over one of my left feet, header into a door frame. Forehead goose egg, 6 stitches, two black eyes & general embarrassment still. We are obviously twins parented by klutzes, separated at birth.

Hear, hear. Well-meaning efforts, but, yeah gotta get concrete about damage & specific about remedies in as straightforward & politically neutral fashion possible. (Living in a tiny blue bubble in a great big red sea is a daily exercise in practicing that disciplined approach.)

There is a reason it's pointed away from us 🤦‍♀️ . Kinda ready for our moment with Klaatu & Gort.

Glad you got that done, good advice! Btw, hadn't realized you'd left the feds. Whew, big step & can only imagine the resonances right now. Wish you the very best!

Just that gif gets my blood pumping! Number of times I've read Master & Commander (let alone the rest of the series) plus movie viewings, it's waaay more than 6. Galaxy Quest (every Star Trek, really) is the same story, isn't it 😜?

Jotting a reply because it's just not in me right now to hit a stupid little heart for this even if we all understand it just means acknowledgement. Just...fereffssake. 💔🤬

Thanks! Weird to run into it this a.m., & to compound hassle, current dates have now propagated deep into search results, adding to Orwellian vibe. Will delete comment now it's been cleared up.

Shh. If they notice, someone's gonna rename it 🫣. And gods, I wish that was a joke.

...or Top 10, Billboard Global Hot 200 if one's ready to go full parental-joke mode featuring an awkward attempt at pop culture cool-kid relevance. Dig it, man, I think I've gone & jumped the shark.

What he said. Except with an incredibly au courant pop music analogy that casually demonstrates I am, for an aging physicist, so totally hip & in-tune with the youth scene. Kidz theez dayz. On it.

All ten of the last ten years were in the top 10 warmest years--it's kinda like talking about how Taylor Swift albums charted. Kinda.

Such a pretty blue! Any luck identifying? If not, maybe @cataranea.bsky.social can help?

Suspect that's attributing a waaay-too-sophisticated geographical understanding to a guy who thinks California's water supply comes from what is 'essentially a very large faucet in Canada'...😳
comment in response to post
...tho aren't most New Yorkers (& westerners, for that matter) pretty vague about where their water comes from, let alone anyone else's? But less inclined to be off-the-cuff experts & less dangerous 😱.

Not a waste--so much sci-comm goes awry cuz we incorrectly assume assumptions. Granted, unlikely you'll get the opportunity to query the source in this case, but good practice 😆.
comment in response to post
Yeah, one can't help but wonder how the massive press of enthusiastic scientific humanity at a major meeting might feel to non-practitioners. Bewilderment, at least.
comment in response to post
There is sometimes a faint whiff of the megachurch at an AGU meeting. Or a touch of incense? It's been a while. Maybe it was just my phantosmia. Wonder if church-goers catch a bit of petrichor at their gatherings & fear they're haunted by geophysicists.

Thought-provoking overview, quick read, useful distillation of concepts. Many angles relevant to sci-comm in general, climate discussion in particular. In fact, I need to look at it again myself. Been referring to it a lot lately...

Omg. This might just beat tea & shortbread. Homemade rosemary shortbread, even. Fortunately, not mutually exclusive. 1000 🙏.

The Good Stuff! Guy on the street opens his jacket, shows you a shelf of jars like that tucked under his arm, watch yourself. It's either hot honey or corn syrup-infused counterfeits...

Stylish, deadly--somewhere there's a smoking gun. Or perhaps a cabaret singer leaning languidly on the piano between numbers with a cigarette held just so. Bryan Ferry, I think, inscrutably contemplating the end of the night and the world as we know it.

This is non-visual-thinker moi regarding captions. Or, no, dear Professor-Wanna-Be-Edward-Tufte-Author, I don’t have the foggiest what you’re trying to do w/that graphic. Help us out with some words that make sense. There. I’ve said it. Deepest professional shame revealed.

…though in a better, kinder world, it’s software developers who’d be required to play it & follow the instruction before submitting an entirely arbitrary procedural change. And then, one hopes, forget all about it while checking to see if there are any more biscuits left in the tin.
