Report from @science.org: • NSF staff told that its 37 divisions are being abolished. Programs within to be drastically reduced. • Layoffs expected, details via memo Friday 5/9. • Another round of grant terminations expected. (Already 1400 cancelled ~$1bn) www.science.org/content/arti...

A #fridayfollow. The assaults on reason & science continue by the administration. It's exhausting. Here are a few scientists whose work you should know about. Please feel free to add: @nathanlo.bsky.social @drelleneaton.bsky.social @emmybetz.bsky.social Each is doing lifesaving & innovative work.

This is a disaster for global public health. I think moving to a model where the IC funds directly could be a not-bad thing, esp if it allows for capacity building re: admin for NIH grants and empowering institutions to lead them, but destroying everything first is not how you achieve that.

BREAKING: NSF has frozen all grant funding, as of yesterday. It's unclear when they will resume funding awards, or why the pause has been put in place. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

1/n I don’t understand the new Dept HHS assertion that childhood vaccines weren’t tested in placebo-controlled trials. That’s simply not true. I did a quick (non-exhaustive) PubMed search and they came up pretty quickly. For example here’s MMR

How about we just don't find out?

I received a surprising and disturbing request from NIH on Friday. They wrote to cancel a subaward to Hong Kong on one of my grants. (This was disturbing but not surprising.) They also ordered us not to interact with our collaborators in Hong Kong on any work under the award:

This is excellent, incredibly timely and important. Thanks @nathanlo.bsky.social and team for this work and for sharing it in this detailed thread. We can't afford to roll back the incredible gains made in the control of infectious diseases by allowing sustained declines in vaccination.

Breaking news: The United States faces millions of measles cases over the next 25 years if vaccination rates for the disease drop 10 percent, according to new research published Thursday.

Continued routine childhood vaccination at high coverage is needed to prevent resurgence of vaccine-preventable infectious diseases and their infection-related complications in the US. ja.ma/3YeEcVv #MedSky

If they proceed with this plan, it will effectively choke whatever life is left out of the health research academic community. To put it bluntly it will kill any possibility of a grant funded career doing health research in the U.S. www.statnews.com/2025/04/21/t...
