The Australian National Maritime Museum publishes its final report detailing the outcome of a 25-year project to discover the final resting place of James Cook’s historic vessel, HMB ENDEAVOUR, confirmed to be located in Newport Harbor, Rhode Island, USA. www.sea.museum/en/maritime-...

New Zealand calls for sub-standard ships to be banned. We would all agree that unsafe ships should be prohibited but clear, unambiguous criteria need to be agreed. Perhaps a good starting place would be the class society responsible for issuing certification? maritime-executive.com/article/new-...

Interesting report about the incidence of fires on ships specialising in the carriage of vehicles, including Pure Car/Truck Carriers (PCTCs) like MORNING MIDAS, suggesting an emerging trend revealing the vulnerability of these ship types to cargo fires. VERY costly. gcaptain.com/a-brief-look...

The latest ship to succumb to an uncontrollable fire is MORNING MIDAS (IMO 9289910) - a vehicle carrier built in 2006 flying Liberia flag, classed by Lloyd’s Register. All crew safely abandoned ship and rescued by a passing ship. Salvage operation has been initiated shipwrecklog.com/log/2025/06/...

Well-written report about recent sinking of 28-year old container ship MSC ELSA 3 (IMO 9123221, Liberia-flag, BV-class) off the coast of India - all crew rescued by the Coast Guard which is now dealing with pollution risk www.downtoearth.org.in/pollution/ms...

It wasn’t only the Norwegian homeowner who woke up to find a ship in his garden - apparently the same was true of the Officer of the Watch, who’s now been charged with “negligent navigation”. Perhaps he was also wearing “the wrong trousers” (ref. RMS MULHEIM ship accident in Cornwall, UK in 2003).

Knock! Knock! “Who’s there?” A 9,990-ton container ship! Missed the right turn?! The CEO of North Sea Container Line (owner of NCL SALTEN - IMO 9252773 - built in 2002, Cyprus flag and classed by DNV) said there was “no reason to believe this was intentional”. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m...

A Mexican naval ship in the East River accelerated suddenly in the wrong direction before slamming its masts into the Brooklyn Bridge in a crash that killed two crew members, federal transportation officials said on Monday.

Photo of the beautiful New Zealand port of Lyttelton taken last month with passenger/cruise ship CELEBRITY EDGE (IMO 9812705) alongside. As they say, “A picture tells a thousand words…”

The below excellent photo by Daniel Briot (credit) shows the presentation of the sail training ship CUAUHTEMOC on entering the port of Rouen a few years ago. Approx. 90 of the crew are trainees, many of whom routinely stand on the yardarms as depicted in this photo.

Sincerest condolences to the crew & families associated with the Mexican Navy’s sail training ship Cuauhtémoc which had just concluded a visit to New York’s Seaport Museum. Such a tragic accident with many questions to be answered by the Navy and US NTSB southstreetseaportmuseum.org/cuauhtemoc/

On 19 Aug 2024, the UK-registered sailing yacht BAYESIAN foundered in high winds near Porticello, Italy. 6 of the 12 guests on board and one crew member died. INITIAL STUDIES commissioned by MAIB show vulnerability to high winds such as those at the time of the accident. www.gov.uk/maib-reports...

The Sargasso Sea can seem a lonely place even for an 8,500teu container ship currently without the means of propulsion and awaiting rescue by a salvage tug all the way from Mexico. Here is an update from Lloyd’s List. www.lloydslist.com/LL1153348/Sa...

UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch publishes interim report into the SOLONG and STENA IMMACULATE casualty www.gov.uk/government/n...

Arrival at Aberdeen of the floating burnt-out hulk otherwise known as the container ship SOLONG which struck the chemical/products tank STENA IMMACULATE at the Immingham Anchorage earlier this month. The inquiry continues, led by the UK MAIB. youtube.com/watch?v=CqLA...

News of cargo loss from the container ship MSC HOUSTON V (IMO 9463281) sailing under Portugal flag and classed by Bureau Veritas. Apparently the ship encountered Storm Martinho and probably experienced ‘parametric rolling’. Currently at Vigo, Spain. shipwrecklog.com/log/2025/03/...

Very disappointing news for Port Glasgow as Ferguson Marine loses out to Polish shipbuilder in bid to build electric ferries for CalMac www.fergusonmarine.com/news/small-v...

Interesting report by Nick Savvides, published in Seatrade Maritime News today, entitled “Stena Tanker Hit 3 Times, No Crew on SOLONG’s Bridge”. www.seatrade-maritime.com/accidents/st...

Ernst Russ, the owner of the container ship SOLANG which collided with the anchored chemical/products tanker STENA IMMACULATE on Monday, has just confirmed that the Master who was arrested by police yesterday, is a Russian national. Imagine the “armchair” speculation if he was Ukrainian!

A criminal investigation into the STENA IMMACULATE disaster has been launched by Humberside Police, who’ve confirmed the arrest of a 59-year old man on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the collision. This feels like a wholly appropriate course of action in the inquiry.

UK Government Transport Minister Mike Kane has just given a Parliamentary update. He confirmed the sad news regarding the deceased crew member on board the container ship SOLONG. He also advised the House of Commons that in the opinion of the UK MCA, it was likely that the ship would founder.

Dutch maritime services provider Royal Boskalis has been commissioned to salvage the tanker STENA IMMACULATE, according to trade press in the Netherlands. www.schuttevaer.nl/nieuws/actue...

Here are the latest pictures of STENA IMMACULATE, still at anchor, still with its fire-fighting monitors activated, still with its navigational aids operating and presumably therefore with electrical power being generated and distributed. Amazing. www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/...

Crowley provides an update on the STENA IMMACULATE accident: www.crowley.com/news-and-med...

As usual, the volunteers serving in our Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) ventured into harm’s way to rescue the imperilled crew of the STENA IMMACULATE tanker and SOLANG container ship. We salute you, also Humber Pilots and Windcat Workboats. www.thisisthecoast.co.uk/news/local-n...

According to tanker operator Crowley based in Jacksonville, USA, all crew members on STENA IMMACULATE are safe. www.worldcargonews.com/shipping-log...

Immingham Anchorage is a well-established location where tankers anchor prior to berthing at Killingholme terminal on the Humber. How is it possible for a well-resourced container ship like SOLONG (IMO 9322554) classed by DNV and operated under Portuguese flag, sail into a static tanker at 16 knots?

For authoritative information, check out Lloyd’s List. Latest report is posted at www.lloydslist.com/LL1152824/Ta...

Disaster in the North Sea as container ship SOLANG collided with anchored oil/chemical tanker STENA IMMACULATE earlier today. We salute the heroic efforts of those involved in the rescue, including Windcat Workboats and local tugs and pilotage.
