A very comprehensive update on the big March stories in international shipping. Thank you Prof. Sal. Some of the subjects are rather turgid, not easy to explain - you did a great job - important to keep an agnostic viewpoint.

True, but the dry-dock at Leith has been pre-booked by other companies for servicing their ships - for example, Vroon Offshore.

Possibly because of the dry-dock availability. Same reason as why STENA IMMACULATE would go to Tyneside and not the dry-dock at Immingham.

Firstly there is a dry-dock at Aberdeen operated by Dales Marine. Ship inspection can be performed there safely. Secondly, should the ship be declared a Constructive Total Loss and the decision be taken to scrap it, Dales is one of the handful of companies in the UK authorised to do so at Leith.

I was there! Graduated in 1986 - seems like only yesterday! Very happy days.

Miraculously all were rescued except one SOLONG crew member. Local reports suggest that very sadly, his last known position was towards the enclosed forecastle. This is why the SAR mission was called off last night.

I totally agree. As evidenced by the EVER GIVEN accident in the Suez Canal, people have little knowledge about ships and shipping, which is all the more surprising given that 90 per cent of all goods are shipped by sea.

Good question, it’s obviously a case-by-case situation but the main principle is based on restoring buoyancy. This involves making sure that the hull can be made sufficiently watertight, removing as much top weight as possible and then pumping - replacing water in flooded compartments with air.
