Latest news feature in @natbiotech.nature.com on recent developments in spatial biology to unravel disease mechanisms, with insights from experts in field. @aruthak.bsky.social @nebanovich.bsky.social @ai4pathology.bsky.social @jasmineplummer.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Really excited about this new work from Sam Hart (and joint with @kelleyharris.bsky.social) trying to disentangle mutational differences between groups of cancers. Check out Kelley's thread with the major results!

absolutely crushing

people need to internalize, very quickly, that federal research grants are a hypercompetitive contracting process not charity, and that what Uncle Sam gets in return for that money is American dominance in the future

say it again: 4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities ROI for NIH and NSF for local economies is conservatively 4x, often close to 10x demolishing higher education is economic sabotage

As a former @hhmi.org Gilliam fellow, I’m deeply disappointed to see HHMI cancel the Hanna Gray this year and pause all competitions. @leslievosshall.bsky.social, Erin O’Shea — this was a moment to lead with vision, not retreat.

All NIH and NSF grants for my entire team--and for all of Harvard, I guess?--have been terminated. As provocative as that sounds, the practical effect is probably not much. Everything was already frozen. 🤷‍♂️ On the upside, it makes tracking terminated grants easier. No more guesswork at Harvard!

Yesterday, the NIH R35 “Outstanding Investigator” grant to fund scientists in my lab studying antibiotic resistance was terminated for reasons not related to the content of the science, or any actions taken by me or members of my lab

All of my NIH grants terminated this afternoon along with those of all of my colleagues including big (and extremely successful) P01 grants.

Happy to share the published version of Omar & Sayan’s paper. We generated a DNA-damage-associated cardiomyocyte protein co-expression network to gain insights into tolerance to genetic variation and disease. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

New preprint! My (now former) postdoc @kvastad.bsky.social led this integration of GWAS and spatial transcriptomics (ST) data to identify tissue structures with enrichment of disease-implicated genes = likely causal drivers of disease biology. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

🎉 This paper has been a long time and a labour of love (and hardship) for multiple group members, but, finally: we MPRA'ed 25k introgressed variants (Denisovan and Neanderthal) segregating at allele frequencies > 0.15 in humans today to evaluate their potential to regulate gene expression.

Why are they trying to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs? #WithoutNSF the US would not be at the forefront of science innovation in the world. #SaveNSF #StandUpForScience www.nsf.gov/policies/doc...

This new guidance is yet another step closer towards an isolationist, diminished view of American science. Changing rules on the fly wastes time & effort and undermines the pipeline of discovery and innovation. Unacceptable & inexcusable (again): grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

NEW: The NIH has begun terminating grants for active projects studying gender identity, DEI, environmental justice, climate change, among other topics. At least 16 termination letters have already been sent — and hundreds more are coming, people inside NIH tell me. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Current NIH funding slump represents: - Research labs closing - PhD students abandoning their dreams. - Trial participants left to their own devices mid study. - A halt to scientific progress and innovation for cancer, chronic and infectious diseases. - Minority health research terminated. Etc.

The National Cancer Institute has disbanded its Board of Scientific Advisors — a group of experts that played a vital role in shaping the future of U.S. cancer research. Here’s why that matters. 🧵

There are few things as cost effective as Narcan, especially in a country where (entirely preventable) opioid overdoses have been a leading cause of death for years. For every 6 kits distributed 1 OD is prevented. The $56M in this grant trained >66K people and distributed >282,500 kits in 2024 alone

NIH just posted a Notice with the new Terms and Conditions... grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Looks like ~9,000 people made it to the Bernie/AOC rally in #Missoula yesterday. Considering it was a Wednesday in the middle of the day, that’s super impressive. Comparing it to the prior records: the 10k Women’s march was on a Saturday and Trump’s BZN 8k rally was at night. #FightingOligarchy

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

I was in Boston a few weeks ago and my colleagues at Harvard were looking to their leadership for this type of response. Way to go Harvard! www.harvard.edu/president/ne...

Free idea: a website where you enter the name of your disease/injury/condition/procedure and get shirts, stickers, signs, etc. with “NIH grant number X saved my life.”

There's nothing like a puppy break to rejuvenate and recharge after a productive week 🐶 And thankfully, #ATS2025 has got that covered! The puppies will return to the exhibit hall this year for attendees to enjoy a little paws-itivity!🐾 Register today! conference.thoracic.org/attendees/re...

I’m excited to share our new preprint, “Overcoming myeloid-driven resistance to CAR T therapy by targeting SPP1.” In this study, we identified and targeted a macrophage population shaping the tumor microenvironment in GBM, greatly increasing the efficacy of CAR T therapy. doi.org/10.1101/2025... 1/7

Excited to share our new work exploring strategies to overcome resistance to CAR T cell therapy in solid tumors. Using scRNA-seq, mouse models, and functional studies, our work points to SPP1 signaling in the TME as a critical component of this resistance. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Had a great visit to BWH/Harvard yesterday. Enjoyed spending the day talking fun science with the the great folks in the Channing. Thanks for the invite @asaferali.bsky.social! Had to snap a quick shot of this old add displayed on the wall highlighting how horrible tobacco companies were.

Excited to share Ruqian has developed a package for this transcript based niche analysis. Check out the preprint and the package! This is a flexible approach and we're working on extending this for other spatial analyses! @davisjmcc.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

New lab photo(s)! First time the whole lab was together in person in ~4 years. Had the bright idea to stick us all in the freight elevator on the way down for our photo shoot.

I just had my busiest week in lab since finishing my PhD, and I loved every second of it. This government can attack diversity and science and education all they want, but they’ll NEVER take away my passion for science and my responsibility to use my education to research cures for human disease

It's not every day your work is on the cover of a magazine. Congrats to first author and TGen post-doc, @annikavannan.bsky.social, @nebanovich.bsky.social, his team and collaborators on earning the cover of this month's publication of @naturegenet.bsky.social 🧬 🫁 👏 Photo courtesy of Nature Genetics

When I hear people shrug and say "Columbia/The Ivies will recover", I'm not worried about the institutes. I'm worried about people like this and the cascade of lives their work would have benefitted. Shattering.
