I would say she pilfered a lot of the aesthetic world-building – some of it is identical (the Great Hall, the bucking broomstick, the house colors). YKW’s real skills lie in plotting and remixing. All writers steal, but her failure to ever even mention “The Worst Witch” is pretty unconscionable.

Yes, and it’s deeply cultural (and deeply white): people are taught from a very young age to just NOT MENTION bad things, to NOT LOOK at them, to NOT SEE them, and some people get to the point where they cannot see it even if they’re looking directly at it.

Also, I think every person in my group ran into at least one person we know. And the Mall was PACKED, so the number of people we knew but did not see? Was probably high. And I love that.

asking people to avoid being cringe at all costs is asking them to harden their hearts, and I’m not sure why you’d then expect someone who’s hardened their heart to choose the communal good or the defense of the vulnerable over individual gain and safety
