This Welfare Bill stuff is Starmer’s Tuition Fees moment. Early in his premiership Blair introduced means tested tuition fees. Right up until the day the whips thought he’d lose the vote in Parliament. The government ended up winning. No idea if Starmer’s Bill will go the same way.

I'm currently at a housing conference & it's a slightly out of body experience politically, given the vibe here is thrilled with getting £39bn + basically all they asked for in spending review. Not that govt isn't in deep trouble elsewhere but it's a striking eg of how easily the popular stuff...

What the fuck is going on? (Just going with the theme of the day!) #Israel

I sort of get this BUT if this falls taxes will have to be raised and then we’re into Labour raising taxes on working people to support those on benefits - it’s easy to find people who many feel shouldn’t be.

Piers Morgan speaking surprisingly sensibly on the BBC this morning. Who knew?

Exactly my thoughts

I find this phrase “Iran should never be allowed nuclear weapons” troublesome. Of course we don’t want anyone -esp. our enemies to have them. But who made the US et al the police of the whole world? Who gets to decide who has nukes or not?! #Iran

Oh I’m awake to see WW111 start. How lovely. 😞

Bluesky is SO much better than X. If you do ever go for a short dip in the cesspit over there you’ll need a thorough cleanse after.

MPs have voted for assisted dying: 314 - 291

In Praise of Kim Leadbeater Regardless of how today's vote goes, she has shown us a politics of compromise, compassion and decency. We should treat it as proof of concept for a better kind of politics. iandunt.substack.com/p/in-praise-...

Just listened to @shelaghfogarty.bsky.social tell her listeners it’s now legal to “kill a baby up to 40 weeks” I thought @lbc.co.uk were better than these sort of lies and misinformation. This does a huge disservice to women. Abortions have NOT been made legal to 40 weeks. Correct it. It’s lies.

My no ranting on local FB groups rule has taken a nosedive since my MP started posting 🙄

Shelagh Fogarty started her LBC show with a blatant pro-life lie. Pregnancy CANNOT be “legally aborted up to 9 months”. Abortion isn’t decriminalised. It’s still only allowed until 24 wks. Two docs (who could face arrest) must sign it off. She’s an idiot that’s spreading disinformation.

My MP Nick Timothy asks a completely pointless question despite being all over our local FB group asking what he should ask and how he’s going to get answers. 🙄 #PMQs

Chris Philp is an absolute tool, now he wants to scrap the ECHR. You don't scrap the rights of the entire population because of one person.

Every time I tune into PMQs I am reminded how good it is for British politics that most people don’t.

Chris Philp actually better at #PMQs than Kemi (I guess not that hard). Angela Rayner doing very well though.

Former Conservative and UKIP MP and Boris Johnson government appointee here calling for the mass deportation of British Pakistanis Islamophobia is absolutely rampant in conservative politics now and almost nobody even acknowledges it

Shall we remind ourselves what this guy thought of investigations into child sexual abuse? youtu.be/Gmw6jaIce6I?...

For the first time this year, Labour is making up some ground in the polling average - now back to where they were before the locals. Reform lead by 4.7%, down from a 7.7% peak. RFM: 28.7% (+14.0) LAB: 24.0% (-10.7) CON: 17.8% (-6.5) LDM: 13.8% (+1.3) electionmaps.uk/polling

Reform’s polling is slowly declining from its peak after the local elections. New from YouGov: RFM: 27% (-2) LAB: 24% (+1) CON: 17% (=) LDM: 15% (=) GRN: 10% (=) SNP: 3% (=) 15-16 June Changes with 8-9 June

A very strong statement on Grooming Gangs from Yvette Cooper. Such inaction over 14 years. The Home Secretary has made clear that this must end immediately. The plans outlined will bring about meaningful change. Perpetrators of all ethnicities need locking up. Not ignoring victims any longer.

Very good statement by Yvette Cooper. Kemi Badenoch straight to playing politics with victims of child rape.

9 years ago today, my colleague Jo Cox was murdered doing what she loved - serving her community. Her compassion, courage, and belief that we have more in common than that which divides us remain a guiding light. We remember Jo, and we recommit to the politics of hope.

Chris Philp bleating that Starmer has announced the Grooming Gang inquiry before their vote in Parliament. “We had a vote in 2 days”. He seems more worried he hasn’t got the chance to win his vote than he does about victims and justice. “We had a vote” he cried an about 5 times.
